Hi everyone! My DH uses the DisBoards frequently and I decided to set up my own account to ask a few questions of my own. I'm a total newbie to message boards, so I apologize if this post has been done already.

We are going to Disney on May 31st & I'm looking forward to meeting characters more than anything! I know....I'm 32, but September was the first time I was ever in Disney & I feel like a little kid again! I can't begin to tell you the way I felt the night we got there & saw Spectromagic for the first time  . Let's just say that I loved it so much that I can't watch our video footage without tearing up. The week was incredible thanks to great planning & it was the best vacation I took since my honeymoon back in 2004.

ANYWAY - to get to my point....does anyone have a list or any good knowledge about which characters talk and which ones do not? I'm reading other threads about what to say to them & I was curious about it. Any feedback would be appreciated!

OK basically all face characters talk i.e Snow White, Captain Jack etc. Those with 'heads' on such as Mickey Mouse etc do not talk. If this has changed since last time I went to the parks then someone correct me but I'm fairly sure this is still the case.

Correct.
If you mean, "In-person, personal contact."

Any of the characters seen IN A SHOW...
like the Rope Drop Ceremonies, the Castle shows, the parades...
can speak their parts "from the stage" to the mass audience.

As an example,
Mickey Mouse will speak to guests while he is riding by on his parade float in the Animal Kingdom,
but if you see him at the character breakfast (Donald's Safari Breakfast at Tusker House,)
Mickey will not speak aloud when you meet him.

What about Donald and Pluto? I've read that Donald will make raspberry noises and Pluto makes slurping noises when he licks the kids. Is this true? Do any of the others make any type of noises?

Yup.

Mickey and Minnie (and others) will make 'kissing" sounds when they give you a smooch.

(But making sound effects is not exactly "talking.")
;)

Yep, Pluto totally slurped me when I took a photo with him and Mickey in '06. He also wanted he to "scratch" his belly. It was very odd.

Don't some of them also have certain reactions to certain things you do?

:welcome: to the DIS, bigDISdaddy!

Yes, they ALL basically have "cues" that can make them react.

For instance,
Capt. Hook goes nuts if you make a clock-ticking sound.

Chip 'n Dale will get upset if you call them "squirrels."

I'm sorry, I don't mean to steal the thread....but this post got me to thinking, We are going in Aug, and our 5 yr old is very inquisitive. What do you tell your children when they ask "why did Mickey/Minnie etc...not talk to them?"

They have to meet so many people every day that they must save their voices by only talking in the shows and parades.

Even though the characters with "head costumes" don't talk words, they communicate in many different ways - so go ahead and talk to them - it's much like playing charades in that they will "act out" their responses. Of course you don't ask things like "what's the meaning of life", but you can ask Mickey something like "where's Minnie?" (If she's not around). If you're at a character breakfast you can comment on the food - or what the character is wearing.
It's fun to watch their reactions.

As far as how to explain to kids - I'm not sure if I've ever recalled a kid asking or demading a character speak to them - I think they're just so overwhelmed seeing them and they prefer hugs to words. But if your kid does ask you can say something like "they don't talk alot because they have to save their voices for the parade and show" "if they talked to eveyrone they could get a sore throat".

But again, even without words the characters can interact on many levels and it's alot of fun.

One odd thing though. In Dec 2007 we had reservations at Cape May for breakfast and when Minnie came over I told her that she was my favourite character and she "said": Huhmmm and then I asked to take a pic with her and she "said" huhmmm. And it was weird cuz although it was only a "huhmm" it was obvious to me that it wasnt Minnie's voice. But then, i'm sure kids wouldnt notice but it was weird.

Thank you for the responses. Does anyone know about Donald making any sound effects anywhere that he appears?
