*candid shots are great, but if you want a posed shot, give the character a chance to finish signing the autograph first. I've seen so many families in which the children are already posing, and the parent takes the photo as the character is still trying to sign.

*a photo will look better without the pen and autograph book in the character's hand. Remind your children to take them back from the character.

*some characters are good at putting everyone in fun poses, but some will do the same basic pose for every shot. If your pictures are starting to look repetative, come up with some fun poses to suggest on your own before you approach the character. A starting point is different levels make pictures more interesting. Rather than everyone standing in a line, some can crouch down, sit, or kneel.

*Have shorter people and children stand in front, especially in a large group in which you otherwise will not be able to fit everyone in the shot.

*try different angles- an above shot of a toddler giving a big hug, etc.

*don't always worry about getting the kids to look at the camera. If a character takes your child by the hand, a back shot of the two of them walking away together can be precious. Also, sneak around to the other side and get a shot of your child's joyful face looking up at the character.
