We just went to GK it was so fun and we were not rushed. They also had great food. I am sorry you did not have a good time.
I've had the same experiences as you did, PrincessMaleficent. I love the yummy food, I love the huge selection of food and I am fine with the number of characters and the interaction. Goofy's is actually my favorite place to eat in DLR, period.
But to be fair to Kerri and her experience, I've been eating at Goofy's a really long time. I'm sure that in my long history of eating there, there have been a handful of days over the years where the service was not as good, the food was not as good, the character interaction was not as good, etc. I think that once you make up your mind that you like a place after several visits, you probably stick with it even when it has 'off' days, and I was already a loyal customer! Like for those folks who love Minnie & Friends, there are probably days when everything is 'off,' but because they already love it they will continue going back.
Kerri's first impression of Goofy's was not great. It's not like she had eaten there a bunch of times and they had one or two 'off' days. So she would have no reason to want to go back (for that high amount of money) since the first impression was not a good one. But because she has had great experiences at M&F and Ariel's, if those places have 'off' days here and there, her family would still likely go back. I think the first impression carries a lot of weight. And the character meals are just too costly to take a chance on a second time if you didn't like it the first time.
I think much of the character meal 'review' aspect of things is also based on preferences and subjectivity. Some folks are okay with certain things or certain numbers of characters, and some folks are okay with food at certain places, while others are not okay with it and think it's horrible - and this applies to
every single restauarant in DLR, not just the character meals. What one person loves, another will hate. Or some people will not 'get it' while other people totally buy into it!!
Basically, Jillian - it breaks down this way:
Minnie & Friends has the most characters out of all the character meals. That is evident by the photos. The food gets very mixed reviews - ranging from great to "inedible" (again, keep in mind the 'off' days and the personal preferences of others). M&F is also a tad cheaper than Goofy's, Ariel's and Surf's Up.
Goofy's Kitchen has the widest selection of food - huge buffet - and anywhere from 5 - 8 characters, including a couple of Princesses and classic characters. (My personal favorite for breakfast/brunch - NOT dinner.) It's very expensive though, so that AP discount helps!! Considered Premium Dining.
Ariel's is all Princesses, but the food is unique and more upscale. Also very expensive. Also Premium Dining. Usually about 4 or 5 Princesses onsite.
Storytellers Cafe Critter Breakfast has a small buffet OR a menu option. There are usually between 4 - 6 characters onsite, and they are all woodsy/jungly Disney characters, like Koda and Kenai. Food is decent.
Surf's Up with Mickey and Friends is the only meal where Mickey will appear. There are usually about 5 characters onsite. All of them are wearing beachy/surf-type clothing. The buffet is probably bigger than the Critter Breakfast but not as big as Goofy's. They have some unique items in their buffet - some with a Latin or Asian influence.
