I know everyone raves about the character meals so we're thinking of doing one. Just wanted some advice on which ones. There's so many to choose from. We're leaning more towards doing a breakfast. My stupid question is...some of the meals are at other resorts. Are they open to anyone or only those at those particular resorts? Thanks!

You can eat in the restaurants at any of the resorts, even if you don't stay on property. As for character meals, check to see which ones fit your family: do you want Mickey and friends, princesses or other characters such as Lilo and Stitch or Chip and Dale. Go to the reviews and the discussion boards to see which characters are at which places, or even at Disney World online.
For me, my favorite has been breakfast with the princesses (usually 4 of them) at Akershus in Norway.
Remember, you don't do these for the food, but for the character interaction. The food is secondary.
Have fun!

My favorite is Crystal Palace at MK with Pooh and Friends. Great characters, great breakfast buffet. and Eeyore!

We're think of the breakfast with Goofy, Minnie and Donald, or the Chef Mickey or the one at Crystal Palace. Don't really want to do the princess ones because I don't think my son would enjoy it as much....so I don't know, lol....tough decision! :rotfl:

We're doing breakfast at Chef Mickey, Crystal Palace and Ohana on our trip next March. I really do love Crystal Place. The food is great, the characters are wonderful and they don't rush you. We've heard the Ohana breakfast is a lot of fun. We opted to do Akershus again rather than 1900 Park Fare, but I've heard the characters at Park Fare really make it fun.

Tusker Breakfast - Donald, Mickey and Minnie - food is really good quality for a WDW buffet

We've eaten at Tusker House for breakfast and Chef Mickey's and Crystal Palace for dinner. They all have about the same quality food. It just depends on the characters you want to see. Crystal Palace will always be our favorite because of Pooh and Eeyore. :lovestruc

We ate breakfast at Chef Mickey's and dinner at Crystal Palace. We enjoyed the atmosphere and character interaction at both, but enjoyed the food much better at Chef Mickey's - mostly because it was breakfast.

just fyi, if you schedule a late breakfast, you get a bit more character interaction and more for your money foodwise as you can make it breakfast/lunch.

not sure what your son age but my son loves the following:
Crystal Palace (Pooh, Piglet, Tiger and Eeyore), we usually go for lunch b/c we ate at other character breakfast.
Chef Mickey (Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy and Donald)
Cape May
Tusker House (my husband and I love this along with our son...great food selection and have a musical parade)
Hollywood and Vine (my son loves this one b/c the have sing/dance and a musical parade)
Hope this helps.

All character meals at the resorts are open to anyone, regardless of where you're staying.

These are the character meals that I'm partial to:
-Crystal Palace (any meal): Pooh, Eeyore Tigger, Piglet
-Garden Grill at Epcot (dinner): Chip, Dale, Mickey, Pluto
-Ohana at the Polynesian (breakfast): Lilo, Stitch, Mickey, Pluto
-Garden Grove at the Swan (dinner on Monday/Friday): Timon & Rafiki

I would say Chef Mickeys for breakfast and Crystal Palace for a dinner or lunch. Enjoy!

We went a little bonkers and did six character meals on our last trip. Mercifully all were covered by the dining plan. Out favorites were Ohana and Crystal Palace (twice, breakfast and dinner). We also did Chef Mickeys, Donald's Safari, 1900 Park Fare (breakfast). If you do Crystal Palace, shoot from 8 am, before the park opens. You can come in and do pictures on an empty Main Street before heading to your reservation. We liked Ohana because it was the most fun.

1. I think my first question would be are you on the dining plan? The reason I ask is if you are paying out of pocket (OOP) then I would suggest doing a breakfast. These are typically less expensive than lunch and dinner and lunches my be a few dollar less than dinner.

2. Do you want the character meal to be in the park you are visiting that day, or do you mind traveling to a resort for the meal?

3. What characters do you and your children really want to see and get pictures.

I have eaten at many of the character meals.

Breakfast - Favorites ones first

1. Tusker House at Disney's Animal Kingdom - (Safari Donald, Daisy, Mickey, Minnie and Goofy. The breakfast food here is my favorite. There is great selection, it has always been very fresh. The tropical juice is delicious and the kids get to do a parade with shakers and noisemakers. The only downside of this one is it is very noisy, but worth it.

2. Crystal Palace at the Magic Kingdom - (Pooh, Eyeore, Tigger and Piglet) Food is good and it is in the Magic Kingdom. We like to eat a granola bar in the room and then head to the MK for opening ceremonies, ride a few rides and then have a late breakfast. We skip lunch and have a snack (love dole whips) and then have dinner.

3. Chef Mickey's at the Contemporary resort - Food is typical breakfast and is average, but I love seeing Chef Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy and Donald.
This one for me is less about the food and more about the characters. It is either a short walk or monorail ride to the MK after.

4. 1900 Park Fare at the Grand Floridian - (Mary Poppins, Alice, Mad Hatter, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger) Food is good here. It is a unique collection of characters. If you have breakfast here, it is a short monorail or boatride to the MK afterwards.

5. Cape May Cafe at the Beach Club Resort - (Minnie, Donald, and Goofy were there last time I was there.) This one is conveniently located to Epcot. If you take a taxi to the resort for breakfast, you can then enter Epcot through the International Gateway which is much less crowded then the front entrance. The food is average breakfast buffet.

6. O'hana at the Polynesian - (Lilo and Stitch) This one is not a buffet. It is all you can eat family style. They bring platters to your table. The food was good, but I am not that into Lilo and Stitch and prefer to dine with Mickey.

Lunch

Crystal Palace is the only character lunch I have done. Same characters as breakfast. The food is pretty good. It is a nice break in the day, but sometimes we eat to much and are sluggish afterwards.

Dinner

1. 1900 Park Fare at the Grand Floridian -(Cinderella, Prince Charming, Lady Tremayne and the step sisters) This is one my favorite character meals. The buffet has yummy prime rib and great variety. The characters are great fun for the entire family. Interaaction between guests, Lady Tremayne and the step sisters is quite humorous.

2. Garden Grill at Living with the Land in Epcot -(Mickey, Pluto, Chip and Dale). The food is average here and is served family style at your table. The reason I really like this restaurant is that it is small and the characters typically make it to your table more than one time. They also spend more time with you and don't seem to be as rushed.

I haven't done too many character dinners.

I hope this helps. Please remember everyone that this is my personal opinion and I am sure we won't all agree :)

If you're on the dining plan- a dinner is more bang for your buck...if you're paying OOP- breakfast is the better way to go...unless you see something on the menu you really like for lunch or dinner.

For breakfast- the top nod goes to Crystal Palace- especially if you can secure a spot before the Magic Kingdom opens. Although, the lunch/dinner menu at CP is more appealing to us.

Tusker, Chef Mickey's, 1900 Park Fare, and 'Ohana are all good non-princess character options beyond that. You'd just have to decide based on location, food, price, and typical characters as to which one is best for you.

If you're looking for lunch or dinner- Crystal Palace, Chef Mickey's or Garden Grill are the ones we'd look at for a non-princess meal.

Disagree with post 8 and 9 regarding food quality at CM. CM and Hollywood and Vine are the worst buffets (both dinner) I've had at WDW by far. Both are 100% comparable to what you get at Golden Coral

Sadly, I have to agree about the food at CM. We had dinner there, and it was just ~meh~. Not good, not bad, just blah. But are you really paying for great food? Nope, you're paying for the characters. Thus, we have CM booked again, as both DS and DD had an absolute blast seeing the characters, and both their favorite non-face characters are there (Minnie and Goofy). :thumbsup2

We also did CP breakfast (I think we had an 8:05 am reservation) and CRT (8:10am) and thought it was a wonderful and magical way to start the day. Both times we were out right about park opening, and it worked out great! At the time, DD was 4 and DS was 6 and both of them enjoyed the meals and the character interaction. No, DS was completely wow-ed by the princesses at CRT, but he had a good time anyways!

This time around, we have CP and TH for 8:05am breakfast pre-park opening, CM for dinner, Akershus for a late breakfast (nearly lunch), and are still considering CRT and 1900PF.

Wow...you all have been a lot of help. Thanks for all the tips! We do have the quick service dining plan (free for the week we're going:woohoo:) We'll be driving down, so we'll have to drive to a resort we want to eat at? Right? If I recall the buses from our resort only go to the parks. Or do we have to take a bus to the parks and get back on a bus that'll take us to another resort? I think it'll be much easier to just do a meal at one of the parks then, if that's the case. We definitely do plan on just sticking with breakfast because it is cheaper. And as of right now, we'll probably end up doing 2 character meals, lol. My son wants Mickey and my daughter wants Cinderella. Thanks for all for your input!

Oh another thing....how do you find out about the hours? For instance, how long do they serve breakfast? How do you make a reservation? Do you have to pay when you make the reservation?
