I know there a gazillion threads about this, but I'm being very lazy and hoping y'all will be willing to share your experiences.

We're going in May...5 adults and one kid. Multi-generation trip. We're staying at the Grand. The kid is an 8 year old boy who could give a rat's patootie about princesses. (On our last Disney cruise he appeased me for the Frozen Meet and Greet only because we promised Olaf would be there.) We NEVER stop for character pictures with princesses in the parks except Ariel because he knows she's my favorite.

We've done breakfast at Surf's Up...thoroughly enjoyed it! I might have even cried when my son had one on one time with Mickey dancing to the Beach Boys (my mom's favorite band).

So...what say you? We're open to breakfast or dinner, but we're only doing one character meal (man, they add up!). One boy, parents, aunt, and grandparents...all are Disney fans so no need to try to appease anyone. Just no princesses!

One character meal that my whole family loves is Goofys Kitchen. The ages of people in our party are 8,13,15, 24, 28, 32, 50. Everyone always requests Goofys. We have never done breakfast only dinner my daughter who could also care less about princesses and is more interested if she will meet anyone from star wars loves it. She loves chip and dale who are always there. We always end our trip with Goofys

We love Plaza Inn. There's a wide variety of characters, and no princesses. Sometimes twice as many characters as Goofy's Kitchen.

If only the fried chicken on was included in the character meal!
Man, wouldn't that be great? Unfortunately I don't think people do that character meal for the food. It's pretty standard breakfast fare. But we go for the characters, so we're good with it.

At this point, there are only four character meal locations at DLR that don't have princesses: Minnie & Friends Breakfast at the Plaza Inn (DL), Surf's Up Breakfast with Mickey & Friends (PPH), Goofy's Kitchen (DLH, Breakfast or dinner), and Chip 'n Dale's Critter Breakfast (GCH). It ultimately comes down to which characters you'd like to see...I've heard good things (and bad things) about all of the character meals - both in terms of characters and food - so it really depends on who you'd like to see and what you'd like to eat. If you want dinner, then Goofy's is the only option. Otherwise, I'd probably vote for Minnie's (breadth of characters) or Storytellers (good food).

I caveat all of this with a note that things might be different by May 2018. At this point, Ariel's is slated to close in January and re-open in "summer of 2018". Which means there won't be a princess meal during this period unless they move the characters to another location. So there is a possibility that one of the other character meals might be converted to the princess meal or they might add princesses into the rotation.

Goofy's is the only one my husband will go to because he says if he's paying $30 for a meal it should at least be passable food. ha. Minnie's is ok, if you want breakfast, but the food is nothing special and they do have a lot of characters but many of them are characters my kids couldn't care less about (Max, a fox that I still don't know the name of.) Minnie's is nice though because it's right in the park. For us, our money feels more well spent at Goofy's unless for convenience purposes you want to eat at the park.

We’ve done Goofys, Plaza and Storytellers. Our favourite for characters is the Plaza (we saw 11 at our last breakfast) but we like the food the best at Storyteller’s. We’ve done breakfast and dinner at Goofy’s and we like the food there the least.

We've only ever done Ariel's Grotto and Breakfast with Minnie. We love Breakfast with Minnie. Tons of characters (no princesses), you can see a ton of characters and the Disney Marching Band entering and exiting backstage between The Plaza and Star Tours, and the food is okay. For us it's kind of an efficiency thing. I like a 9:45 reservation and we milk it for an hour and a half and see tons of characters and we can eat late enough that it's like an early lunch and don't need to eat again until about 4 PM. Good luck!
