Our entire family, ranging in age from 2 to 60 and including teenagers, enjoyed Ariel's Grotto lunch alot. We have done Character Meals at many places at DL and WDW and this was our favorite by far.

I was going to say that Ariels is probably not the best choice, for 2 boys, since it is princesses. But, on second thought maybe it is perfect! Where else would the 17 year old want to be?
It really depends on what you are looking for. Storytellers is probably the most low key. The characters come around to the tables, but dont dance and play games like they do at Goofys and Lilo and Stitch.
Minnies is really good. We enjoyed the meal and the interaction. The characters came to each table, played a bit, took pictures, signed our book, etc. The 17 year old wouldnt feel obligated to get involved.
We did not see any princesses at Ariel's Grotto. We saw Minnie, Goofy, Max, Chip and Dale and a few more that I cannot think of right now. All in all there were more than 7 or 8 characters and they spent alot of time interacting. This was June of 2005 during lunch.
I am actually wondering if it will be a problem for you at all, really...I would worry about ages 12-15 the most. It seems like usually by the time kids turn 16 or 17, they are really becoming adults who then get to enjoy all things Disney at a new level. I could be wrong and certainly don't know you particular 17 year old but that is my personal experience. I'd just look for something with the more classic character's and go for it!! I'm sure everyone will have a magical time!
we too our 15 year od nephew to Goofy's kitchen and he enjoyed it as much as my too sons. !!! I think it would be fine. my sons ar 8 and 6.........my 8 year old is very grown up for his age and never said Goofy's is babyish....he just won't dance , but sure will pose for pictures!
My kids are now 25, 23, and 14, and they have always loved Goofy's Kitchen as well as Chef Mickey's at WDW. It's always fun when a princess comes around to get their picture with the teenage boys.
My unmarried BIL made a similar comment when he found out he missed out on having lunch with the princesses when we were there in Nov. He said he should have made it to the park earlier (he met us later that afternoon)!
My family went in 2004 when I was 17 and I loved the Character meals(we went to Goofy's Kitchen.) My parents knew I would but surprisingly my brother who was 15 at the time, and they were a bit skeptic about whether he would like it not or too, ended up enjoying it as well. At first he had been complaining about how lame and dorky it would be but we ended up doing it one more time at his request! heh go figure lol
