Character meals as a solo are definitely NOT wierd. I've done several different ones, and I find Cape May Cafe to be most "solo-friendly." Maybe because of the closeness of convention facilities, but whenever I'm there solo, I notice lots of other solos there, both male and female.
Now I guess I should figure out which characters I'd like to meet and try to plan accordingly. Would a reservation for a solo be required? Any recommendations for meals that don't require pre-payment?
What are some of your favorite meal places with characters?
Thanks for the replies.
Before I went to WDW last November I was thinking the same thing as you. Just so you know, I'm a 37 year old kid in a guy's body. After taking the advice of everyone here on the DISboards, I booked a couple of solo character meals. I had the time of my life at them!
I did 1900 Park Fare for dinner and The Cinderella Royal Table for breakfast. (Yes, I love Cinderella) Never did I feel weird or did anyone look at me funny while I was at the meals. Most of the time, the Parents are busy with their children so they hardly notice anyone else. Plus as a solo you get some really fun and interesting interactions with the characters. At 1900, Lady Tremaine asked me if I was looking for a wife as she had 2 very suitable daughters. According to her I was lucky, her bad step-daughter was already taken.

Overall it was extremely enjoyable for me to dine solo at the character meals and I highly recommend doing it.
