Character Interaction Tips

The best advice I can think of is get to know the characters- rent their movies, learn their stories if you haven't already. That way you can incorporate what you know about them into conversation. Ask characters where another character from their story is. Tell them your favorite part of things you've seen them in. Talk about the first time you saw their film if you remember. Characters really appreciate when you know who they are- especially the rarer ones. Talk to them as you would an old buddy.

Great thread! Count me as socially impaired when it comes to the Characters. I just avoided them (no kids) ... not that I wanted to but I felt kinda shy!!! I admired them from a distance ... watched the kids interact with them. Sooo ... I am reading all the advice for interaction with them!
Help me think of something to say if I see "The Beast" -- Beauty and the Beast are my fav characters!!! :teeth:

I took my then 23 y/o son and 24 y/o D-I-L to WDW last Sept and had a ball watching my D-I-L interact with the characters. Of course it was during a time when the parks were almost empty and most of the characters that were out had little to no lines for them. We ran into Beauty and the Beast standing beside the lake between France and Morroco. No one was around. My D-I-L asked if we could all take a picture with them and we did. She then asked the Beast if she could possibly take one of just the two of them dancing. Belle put her hands on her hips and tapped my D-I-L on the shoulder and said ''excuse me, but he's my Beast and I should be the one you're asking". My D-I-L turned to look at the Beast and we all rolled with laughter. He had put his hands behind his back, was looking down at the ground, shrugging his shoulders, and rubbing one foot in circles in the ground. You wouldn't believe how henpecked that big guy looked. Without missing a beat my D-I-L curtsied to Belle and graciously asked her permission to dance with HER Beast. We got some adorable pictures of them dancing together while Belle looked on.

We also got some cute pictures in China with Mulan and Mischu. We had taken a picture of all of us together, then Mischu pulled my 6'2" son aside and started sqeezing his biceps comparing them to his own. He then pulled him over to the side of the building and posed with his arms up and muscles flexed, motioning for my son to do the same. When my D-I-L tried to get in the picture he pushed her away and motioned that it was a guys only picture. Mulan pulled my D-I-L aside and told her it was a guy thing and they would have their pictures made together without the guys when they finished showing off. When I started to take my D-I-L''s and Mulan's picture, Mischu jumped in behind them just as I snapped the picture again flexing his muscles. My D-I-L shook her finger at him and told him 'bad dragon'. He took her hand and kissed it.

Anyway my D-I-L acted just like a kid with the characters regardless if they were face characters or not. Just relax and remember you're at WDW where everyone gets to be a kid again.

I met Donald one time and I had a cup that had mickey on it. He wouldnt take the picture unless I hid the cup with Mickey on it. I didnt realize it at the time that that;s what he meant but later I got it and had a laugh about it.

The best interaction I had was with a large group of mainly college students, my Dh and I were with them and are about 30. One of them had a little stuffed Mickey. Mickey looked at the Mickey and asked to hold it. He held it as we took the picture but then tucked it into his vest. As we were getting ready to leave the guy who owned little Mickey was looking for it and realized that Mickey still had it. He asked for it back and Mickey looked so sad . . . like he was giving up a child. We were all laughing since we had been trying to take it from him all day ourselves without any success. Mickey gave it back in the end but it was a lot of fun.

Nice to "see" you AngieBelle!

We had great interaction when we came across Pocahontas and Meeko at MK. DD3 had gotten a BIG, REAL hug from Meeko the day before, and this was now our last day in the parks. So she had to go to MK to buy a stuffed Meeko. We were leaving the park, and saw Pocahontas and Meeko in their spot again. So we did a quick detour for one more visit. The handler said they were done seeing families, so we waved and started walking away. Pocahontas saw dd's stuffed Meeko, and told the handler "We HAVE to see them, this is Meeko's SPECIAL fan!" So the handler let us come over. Pocahontas tapped Meeko's arm, and told him to look at what the "little princess" was holding. Meeko held out his hand, dd handed the stuffed Meeko to him, and he hugged it tight, and hugged dd tight too. Cute pictures that day! And Pocahontas was so observant and generous to us, out there in the heat! :teeth:

DD3 had never really been a big fan of the Pocahontas movie, and I am not sure she really even knew who Meeko was until the first time the park's Meeko character hugged her so nicely. Bad part: there really is no Meeko stuff. We looked, and ased, and looked some more. Just the stuffed animal she bought for her one souvenir that trip!

Mum and i have great fun with the characters-and we have no kids with us.
I love to tell Minnie how pretty she is.Also telling Donald he was my number 1 was a big hit!
On our last trip we had great fun with Pluto telling him what a good dog he is,he loved it and licked us to death!

I forgot, another good one is to ask Stitch where his badness level is today.I did this at ohanas breakfast and he knocked over the salt on the table and stormed off!!!

Last October when we were getting ready to go on our second Disney cruise, I decided I wanted to start a collection of character pictures, because I was tired of just looking at them from afar, and there are SO MANY characters on a Disney cruise. I'd done a few pictures with characters as an adult, mainly during one of the old E-ride nights when Fab5 were out but bored because no one was around. My DH, however, said that was fine, but he wasn't going to be in any of the pictures. But he wouldn't say why...I guess he felt silly. And, honestly, so did I...at first.

My first picture on the cruise was with Snow White, and I didn't know what to say. And the character, well, she didn't seem to know how to act with an adult, either, so I almost gave up my character quest then and there. But, then I saw Minnie out on deck in a cute little outfit I'd never seen before, so I got in line right with the kids and when I got up to her, I said, "I'm just a big kid. Can I have a picture, too?" Minnie laughed and held out her arm, and we posted together, and then she pattted me on the head, just like she did most of the real kids! :rotfl2: I just started laughing, and the handler was laughing, so that line has become what I say when I don't know what to say to a character.

And I have to tell you, I just LOVE interacting with the characters now, even if I do still feel awkward sometimes...I've had many great interactions, including later that night when we were in line to pose with Daisy and Donald in their evening wear...DH was going to take the picture but not be in it, but Daisy grabbed the camera and handed it to the CM to take the picture, and then started really fussing over him (straightening his jacket and tie, etc.). I didn't mind, since Donald was kissing my hand and fussing over me. After the picture, Daisy didn't want to let DH go, and Donald had to 'convince' her. It was sooo funny...and the best part, that was all DH could talk about the rest of the night ("Did you see how she straightend my tie? And then she didn't want to let me go!"), and now he has to be in ALL the pictures with me, or he gets pouty. :rotfl:

I love to interact with the characters - oh yeah so does my five year old dd! I love to make a tick tock sound while dd is talking to Captain hook. He chased me all over and then sided with dd when she told me that making that noise was not really nice. :rotfl2:

As the previous posters have said if you talk about thier movie or outfit will really start a conversation with them. Plus the Princesses will often ask you to send a message to one of the other princesses - it is great fun.

But that's going a bit too far don't you think?

Undoopitaly :rotfl2:

(struggled to spell that word, I can say it no problem)

I too have a hard time, but last September, I thought I'd give it a try. Well, I failed miserably, and now I'm afraid to try again.

Here's one for the tag fairy if she knows I'm alive....

Tip number one...NEVER ask Chip and Dale where they keep their nuts! :guilty:

Not only will they fall to pieces laughing their furry little heads off, all the parents around you will either laugh at your or grab their children and run. :rolleyes1

This thread is great! I think it's better if you try and interact with them. I know it can be a little embarrasing.. when pregnant with my first child, I took a picture with Sleepy the dwarf of Snow White, and I was so excited that I said to him "this is my first photo with my baby and you!!", and he just put his hands over his face like he was so shy! After that, I was a little embarrased because I acted like he was really the dwarf!! but then hey.. that's what it's all about, ain't it?
In my next trip I'll try to interact more with them and act like a child, who cares? my kids will love it, I'm sure!

I was laughing so hard when I read this! Dh is looking at me like I have lost my marbles! :rotfl: :p

My Dh was informed by stitch it was not all started by a mouse but by an alien(exp 626). He had a mickey baseball cap with a pin scroll on it quoting Walt. Later that day while talking to a Mgr. the mgr came back with that Mickey and Stitche's lawyers were fighting it out in court as to who started it all.

I was just curious how you say it sorry :confused3

"But that's going a bit too far, don't you think?" is just a quote from the film. :) The poster wasn't upset with you.
