I apologize for the silly question in advance! This is my first trip to Disney with DS so I don't really know what everything is. Reading many reviews many people say that the character interaction was very good at the restaurant. My question is besides taking pictures and giving autographs what else do they do? Are you supposed to ask them questions? My son said he heard they sit down at your table...is this true?

It depends...

Ohana breakfast with Stitch, DD held his hand during the parade. The characters made several rounds, pluto licks the kids heads...

LTT was crowded and more rushed, it was the photos, autographs, out the door. DD did realize she met minnie untill I showed her the photo to prove it.

The best was at Garden Grill, Chip sat next to DD and wrote a couple of pages in her autograph book about Dale. It was so funny and she talks alot about it. The characters had time to play, Mickey was playing with her stuffed Mickey, it was the best!

It depends on the place, the time, how crowded, etc! Plan on the autograph and photo and be thrilled if they do more. If the place is packed they just might not be able to hang out with you....

I have to totally disagree with a PP on LTT. LTT is the one character meal on property where I've gotten the best character interaction. During one meal, the characters came to our table 2-3 times and it's been like that everytime we've had dinner there (we've eaten there 3 times).
However, at most of the character meals that I've been to, the characters really do take the time to interact and talk with you. Don't feel forced to ask them questions though, they do most of the talking (assuming they are face characters).
At 1900 Park Fare Alice came over and I expected to have to say something to her, but she just started talking and I couldn't get a word in.
I've seen characters sit down at tables before, but it's not like it happens at every table.

It depends on which place...they might sing , dance with them or just be there for lots of hugs!!! At Crystal Palace they have a parade with the kids...so much fun!:)

We had terrific interaction at 1900 Park Faire breakfast. Alice and Mad Hatter were so great and funny. We also had good interaction at Chef Mickeys. We wore our Mickey and Minnie shirts and they really took notice. Now, We went to the Garden Grill for the Candlelight Processional package, and had next to no interaction. We were just adults each time except Chef Mickeys, and then adults and teens.

At LTT we played with Goofy and Chip. Our DS LOVES Goofy and he made sure goofy knew it. He stuck around for our DS an extra few seconds. Chip is my absolute fav  and when my DH told him how jealous he was Chip tried to take me away. LOL

At CRT the DD was wearing her Snow White costume and Snow White stuck around for a few extra seconds to ooh and ahh. Mary Poppins was also a great interaction, especially when DH begged her to know where Bert was. (DH is a HUGE fan of Bert).

At CM DS informed Donald that Goofy was much cooler Donald played with him for a few minutes..messed with his hair, acted like he wanted to fight him.

The only bad character interaction we ever had was at the defunct breakfast-o-saurus (or however it's spelled).
