Character Dining Voucher questions

It's funny, I also was just trying to figure that out and it actually looks like the gratutiy is higher. I may be doing my math wrong :teacher:, but the difference between regular price and full price (tax and tip included) appeared to be closer to a 26% difference. I was thinking maybe 8% tax and 18% gratuity, when trying to figure it, although that seemed high. I ususally only see that high an automatic gratuity on large parties. Thought anyone?? :confused3
Goofy's had been charging 18% in the past, but dropped it to 15% a couple years ago. What numbers are you looking at?

Just an observation but according to the Disney Dining website it specifically states that Vouchers may not be used at Ariel's Dinner for World of Color dining.

Okay.........I think I finally figured it out!!

I looked up my old receipts (yes, I keep everything....) and checked out the two character dinings we did and this is what I came up with:

Goofys total: $93.95, Gratuity, $14.09, Tax $9.45 which = $117.49

Where my confusion was coming from is that $117. 49 is almost 26% higher than $93.95, so if gratuity is 15% and tax is 7.75% it didn't add up.

What my receipts confirmed is that: 15% IS the gratuity, however, they add that amount to your bill and then tax you on the whole thing. And, the Disneyland Restaurant tax rate is 8.75%, not 7.75%.

So for my Goofy's receipt: $93.95 bill total, add 15% gratuity ($14.09) = $108.04. Now they then add 8.75% tax to the $108.04 ($9.45) which then totals the $117.49 we were charged.

What surprised me was that the gratuity was taxed. Usually when we pay tips, they are not taxed, so when people are factoring in tax and gratuity to try to figure the best deal (vouchers or paying w/cash) they need to make sure they add the 15% gratuity to the total bill before figuring the tax.

Hope this makes sense......;)

Correct.

Thanks for the info! :thumbsup2

This is what I need to decide on whether I should purchase the voucher or not!! Unless the character meal costs at least $25.99, the regular dining voucher is still not worth it.

Correct. My spreadsheet has them all in there simply because I keep track of all of them. Sorry.

What is the date on your receipt? The sales tax was 8.75% until July 2011, then dropped to 7.75%.

My receipt was prior to that, so if the tax rate dropped that's good news.

However........I still can't make the numbers work out. Take for instance Goofy's Kitchen Dinner with the new Summer pricing is $35.99. Add 15% gratuity ($5.39) and you are at $41.38. Add the 7.75% tax to $41.38 ($3.20) and the total comes to $44.58. Your quote from Disney is $45.27.

So why the difference???? Kinda drives me nuts not being able to figure it out! LOL

I have not been taxing the tip. I take the food only price Disney provides, add tax at 7.75%, add 15% for tip.

I just recalculated, and I see I am calculating with 18% tip. I will recheck my spread sheet at work tomorrow.
