Channel Tunnel Fire

Both the tunnels are used for Eurostar & Eurotunnel, but they are not a set direction as you cross over when you are travelling no matter whether you are travelling from the UK or France.

Worse case scenario would be that they run a reduced service & just use one tunnel.

Fortunately my uncle wasn't working there today unless they had to call him in.

Anyone who was meant to travel back by eurotunnel will be put on the ferries to get them home.

Really? the bbc article suggested that it was one northbound tunnel and one southbound tunnel. Oh well :thumbsup2

That is what they are known as but you do crossover, have you ever travelled on there & your ears pop like they do on a plane? that is the most likely the crossover point.

I remember when they had the major fire back in the 90's we got to travel through before it got reopened to the public as my uncle is staff. It was great no waiting around or anything.

My ears pop an awful lot on the Eurostar - even more so now that they've added the extra tunnels from St. Pancras :)

It varies from person to person. My ears tend to pop in quite easily on trains when they go into tunnels. It's all down to the change in pressure, whether it be the height of flying in an airplane or entering a tunnel / going down on a train.

Update....

Eurostar will not have trains running tomorrow, it has been announced.

Fingers crossed for everyone travelling over the next couple of days :grouphug:

If it was me I would be tempted to see how much cheap easyjet flights were to get there ........

Hope everything is ok for the people travelling soon! Hopefully it'll reopen soon so people don't start swimming the channel to get to the magic! :scared1:

Just popped in to say I hope everyone's plans remain unaffected by the fire. I have my fingers crossed for you all that you will get away on time and sending some :wizard: too just for good luck. :)

I am going on the 15th Sep, we are trying to stay positive in this house:thumbsup2 .
My Husband works for Network Rail, he said that there won't be much damage done to the track or the overhead lines as they are copper. The problem will be with the actual lining of the tunnel.
If he gets anymore info when he gets in work I will let you know.
I have checked Ferry prices just in case:confused3 :confused3

Just thought I'd put the official statement from Eurostar from 7am this morning

Latest Eurostar Statement - Update 07.00 (UK time)

Due to the incident on Thursday 11 September in the Channel Tunnel, involving a Eurotunnel shuttle train, Eurostar does not expect to operate a service on Friday 12 September between the UK and the Continent.

Travellers holding tickets for Friday are advised that they will be unable to travel by Eurostar.

All travellers booked on Eurostar services on Friday 12 September can exchange their tickets for travel at a later date or get a refund.

Travellers booked on Eurostar over the weekend (Saturday 13 & Sunday 14 September) should check here at eurostar.com for further updates, which will be provided as soon as more information becomes available.
