Changing work location

I got here on January 17 with the role of merchandise. I had my first day of training today and I work at stroller/wheelchair/locker rental. So basically I'm not even doing merch and that's what my major is! If I would have known I would be renting strollers, which I didn't even know was an option, I probably would have not done the program since I don't get any credit from my school and had to be behind but accepted anyway since I love Disney so much. What's more, to clean the strollers we have to use a nasty chemical that gives people rashes and makes them not able to breathe well and I already have asthma. Lol. So I guess what I'm saying is does anyone know is it's at all possible in any way to change your work location within your role? I just wish I could get actual Disney merchandise experience while I'm here since that is my major and i want to be a merchandise buyer once I graduate.

I am not sure if this is actually possible, but I will tell you a story of someone at my location that was able to change:

During my CP, I worked attractions at Dinosaur the Ride at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Towards the end of my CP when new CP's were being trained, a boy in the new training group requested a change in locations because he did not want to be in an indoor location because he said the air conditioning would make him sick. (I did not understand that, because being outside you get stuck in the rain and the burning sun.) He was transferred to a new location.

I cannot say whether or not this would work for you, but I would definitely use it as an option. If you talk to your trainer or manager about the fact that the spray used to clean the strollers would affect your asthma, you could possibly get transferred. Technically, if your health were to be affected by your work location, you should not be forced to work there.

Good luck in whatever happens! My roommate worked at strollers in Magic Kingdom and she still loved her program.

My roommate changed work locations but that was back in Spring 2008 so 3 years ago.

She was at Soarin and did all of her training and passed with flying colors but decided she didn't want the responsibility of running the ride and wasn't confident in herself to make sure everything was safe so she put in for a transfer and was moved to the Pin Station in Epcot which she LOVED...not sure why she even chose Attractions though if she didn't want to take on the responsibility of the riders but w/e. She was transferred and was very happy but like I said, that was 3 years ago, it could be different now.

In my experience, it depends on your managers because they are the ones who will decide whether you can transfer or not. In my last program, I worked in Dinoland Merchandise in Animal Kingdom Park and my friend ask one of my managers if they could transfer, they said no. But I've seen managers in other areas allow transfers to a different area. The stroller and wheelchair rental is consider part of merchandising ( I thought they were main entrance). If you have a manager that you feel is awesome and willing to help, ask them and talk to them about your situation. If your health is at risk, you will probably get that transfer.

You can change locations, however, the sooner you mention it to your management team, the better. If you wait too long, they will respond with 'why did you not mention it before?'

I know of two people who changed locations, one who even changed departments while in the CP. One girl changed departments because she felt she could not handle the safety of guests properly. She was transferred to merch, but ONLY brought it up after being trained on THREE attractions (each one she didn't pass training.) I'm guessing they kept her only because she was CP, I doubt they would have made that exception for a regular cm.

The other girl simply said she had motion sickness on her attraction and they easily switched her attraction. However, they swapped it before her training occurred. It seems that they can and will switch your location if you truly have a reason, besides 'I don't like it.'

However, I am only speaking from personal experience. Every department is different, and I would absolutely ask about it. The worst is that they say no.
