Have I made a mistake? I booked flights this morning for three of us and then added DH as my companion. I got EBCI for all. Tonight after talking with him we decided to return home a day earlier. I went to Change Flight and it says something about cancelling the Companion flight first. So I go to do that and it says the EBCI for him is not refundable. I haven't cancelled it yet. Is this what I have to do though? Cancel him first before I can redo our flights?

In hindsight I shouldn't book my companion until later I suppose, because I may rebook again if fares go down. But it feels weird to have us booked and not him. Or should I book him and just not get him EBCI until much closer to time?

I'm told that you can call in and they can modify the flight while keeping EBCI intact. You can always cancel the companion, so I usually wait until later to buy EBCI. That way, I can cancel and rebook online.

We did this last year when we wanted to reprice DH's flight due to a price drop and I was his companion with EBCI. Changing DH's flight online required canceling my flight and losing the money spent on EBCI. So we called the A-List customer support number and the customer service rep took care of everything. Just be aware that once a Southwest CSR makes a change to your flight, you cannot change it yourself after that. You will have to call them again if you want to make any other changes.

Because of this I decided to take the hit and cancel his flight & EBCI. I hate calling for things I can do online and I want to have the ability to make more changes on my own (hoping the fares go down!). I got us all moved to the other flight and I'll add EBCI to him when we get close to our trip.
