I had planned to take my Wife to WDW for her upcoming B-day. The reservation was made at BWV from 1/30 thru 2/3 for a standard view 1 bedroom. Then I go the email that there was a Preview of EE for DVC members that ended on the 29th. SO DW and I talked it over and I called to make it 1 day earlier. Well the CM checked and the only availability was for a preferred view. So I took it. Now we have the preferrred view for 1 night then we change to the standard view for 4 nights.
The CM told me that it wasn't unusual and that they would pick up our luggage in the morning and deliver it to our new room when we checked in later in the day.

Has anyone experienced this type of room change? Is it a pain?

no it isn't.

are you driving? then leave the rest of your luggage in the car.

if you aren't driving - then tell bell services and only take the one bag for that night. Let them kept the rest of your luggage until the next morning.

so of course if you want to bring everything - then yes - that is okay too - bell services will move you.

also the one and only time this happened to me. I was told NOT to move the next morning.

We do this all the time. Since we fly in from Phoenix, we rarely arrive at WDW before 5 PM, and we're a bit fuzzy due to it being a travel day. So we turn lemons into lemonade by spending the first night in a Studio at a non-SSR resort. This has turned out to be a nice way to sample the other resorts, and give us a relaxing 'ramp-up' into the the Walt Disney Whirl ;) . We started this at VWL and had a great time picking up a quick meal then walking around the property - it was May, so we rode the boat from VWL to FW to CR and back. We've since done OKW, and I just booked a night at BCV before our June SSR trip.

Since we always have a rental car, we've never asked the resorts to move our luggage. Oh, this approach also allows us to check into our 1BR at SSR early (usually in the 9-10 AM range) and get first shot at what's available - as opposed to getting what's left at 5:30 PM the night before.

It wasn't a pain at all. I booked at BWV last year, but they only had 2 of my 3 nights available in BWV. So I had to spend the first night in a regular preferred view, then change rooms. Since I was solo and it was only 3 nights total, I just had one small bag, which I packed and went down to the front desk with it at 9:45 am. Surprisingly, my new room was ready then, and it was only a few doors around the corner from my old room. In retrospect, I should have gone down for the check-out/check-in process without my bag, then I could have gone back up and moved my bag the few rooms away.

Thanks for the replies. This really puts my mind at ease. We are driving so I will take your advice and keep the extra luggage in our van.

Thanks again.

We did this last year. To save on points, we stayed at a value resort, took advantage of ME and then changed to VWL next day. We spent the next day at the parks while our luggage was being ssent over. A breeze.

We are arriving after midnight into a SV Studio at BWV and then the next day our ressies start for a 2-bedroom. I am wondering whether they will assign us to a studio that can just have the door opened the next day, or whether I will want to re-check in the next day to have the best selection of rooms. I am thinking I'd rather move in the morning, since we are having other people stay in the studio the rest of the trip and I'd rather not have to wash all the sheets and clean up the sink, but maybe it's not worth the hassle. I'm also not sure what to ask/tell the front desk when I check in. Will I even have a choice? My only request is non-smoking, although with five kids total, I'd sure like a tub.
