Changing resort at 7 months

I am hoping someone can help me decide how to book a trip.

We are trying to book 9 nights in a one bedroom lake view at BLT on July 4, 2016. Our home resort is AK so I will book there today since it is 11 months prior.

Would it be easier making the switch if I put all 9 nights together or if I book 7 nights and then 2 nights in a few days. Trying to see what would make thinks easier on December 4th (7 month mark) since availability will be much less at that point. If all 9 nights at AK are one reservation will I be able to change all the nights on Dec 4th or would I need to wait 2 more days?

I know summer is not the busiest DVC time, but I am worried because it is so many nights and the Fourth of July. We will also need to buy 20 one time use points when we switch in December to BLT so I will need to add the last night over the phone.

Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks!

When I did July 4th trips in 2012 and 2013, July 3 and 4 were the nights that "sold out" the earliest (And that was me looking for a BLT standard 1BR)

I would definitely book the 4th as soon as possible, (ie 1st 7 days) for the rest of the trip, 1BR lake view should be just fine.

(Most availability issues are MK or Standard view and/or studio or 2BR sizes)

I hope you can pull it off! July 4th books up VERY quickly at every MK resort because of the fireworks.

I would book your AK trip in 2 sections under 2 names (yours and a husband, et,.) That way, you won't lose the whole trip if you try to cancel AKV for the first 2 nights and book BLT. I don't think you will have an issue with any other dates, but the 3Rd and 4th will be tough.

July 4th will likely be the most difficult part of that to get. I think I'd book something like the 4th & maybe the 5th on one reservation and then the rest on a second. That way you can go online and cancel just the first part or if you have enough points that you can book BLT if available then you could do that and cancel the AKV after securing BLT. If you're successful in getting the lakeview you can call MS that same day and have them add to that reservation and cancel the next 5 days of your AKV. 2 days later you could call again and have them add the last 2 nights and cancel the remaining AKV nights.
