We have a 6 night reservation at POR in January. In the event a discount comes out, should I cancel our reservation (room only) and then book at the discounted rate or is there a way to modify? Just want to know beforehand! Thank you!

If you cancel it and then try to rebook, you could lose what you had....you might do better by calling Disney and see if they an modify your reservation. But I would also see what other people suggest as well :)

I was able to modify it online without having to call. Log in to My Disney Experience on the website and click on your plans. Under the hotel reservation there’s a button that says Change Reservation. It gives you the option to change the room type, the offer type (such as to apply a discount), or the entire hotel.

Problem with that is apparently the hold time to call disney can be hours long and by them, most rooms will be booked already!

Yep. Hold times have been 90 minutes to all circuits are busy. Even at this late hour. I was running Florida rates just to get an idea of what I'm going to do, if GP or Visa rates come out. I could do AP in December, but idk what will be available after the discount has been out for two months.

If the discount would be available as if you were making a new booking, you will be able to modify-either online or over the phone-and apply the discount price. If it’s not available online as anew reservation, you will not be able to apply the discount either online or by calling.

If modifying online is not working, you can also book the new rate as a new reservation. Then after you confirm that it is showing in your MDE, cancel the old non-discounted reservation - all online. Disney will refund your old deposit in 2-3 days, so it’s basically a wash.

If you are changing resorts and adding a discount at the same time, this strategy can be to easiest.

Thank you!
This is probably a dumb question, but does your account know if you're an annual pass holder? Like it's linked? I don't have one, so it's saying no discounts are available when I try that. But I'm considering getting one to get the discount. I saw online that you should be able to reserve it as an AP even if you don't have it yet, to and show it at the front desk when you check in.

Yes, would need an AP voucher purchased through Disney (not a third party like Sam’s Club), or an active AP, linked in MDE to book the rates online. If you don’t have that, you can still book the AP rate by calling. Or at least that has always been the case in the past.

Sorry, I never buy AP's so have no idea about them but I am sure many others would know the answer to your question. Post a thread and you will definitely get answers! Good Luck!

I'm not sure about AP because I've never had one but it does recognize I'm a Disney Visa holder so I would assume it would recognize AP holders. I'm not sure how to handle it if you plane to upgrade to an AP when you arrive at disney though.

Just wondering how it knows you are a Disney visa cardholder? I paid for our package using my disney visa and I am hoping if they give a discount for using it, I can change my offer on my disney experience. When I hit offers now, it just says there are no offers available to me. I am hoping if they drop a discount for disney visa it will let me change the offer.

click on your profile in MDE and then click membership and passes. It will show in there if it is recognizing you as a Visa card holderF7A4BA21-8813-4FB4-84C0-3B974513F101.jpeg

I called to try and apply the AP discount to an existing room-only reservation (did not have the option online) and was told I could not do it since there is no availability elsewhere, even though I had a room already. There is no availability right now (which I have a hard time believing is the case). Spent too many hours trying to simply plan a vacation. No dining ADRs at 60 months out. Planning expensive vacations should not be this much work. Hollywood studios here we come. We’ll give you our money.

Having an existing reservation does not guarantee you a discount. Discounts are resort & room type specific with Disney deciding which based on occupancy rates. The discounts are offered to fill vacant rooms. So if room types or resorts are pretty well booked, they won’t be included in the discount. That is one reason people also suggest not booking a room you will only keep with a discount… the more rooms that are booked at rack rate, the less likely there will be a discount. That said, availability changes can happen at anytime as people move resorts or cancel. You can keep checking to see if something opens up. I’ve gone from no rooms at my preferred resort, to a partial stay to the full week.

As far as the work involved in booking a vacation, that’s half the fun for some of us. Especially an expensive vacation, I will put the work in needed to get the best prices, and the rooms & ADRs I want. That’s very much a personal preference. I assume you mean Universal Studios, not Hollywood Studios which is at WDW. For us, that will never be an option. There are almost no rides for people who can’t do roller coasters or simulator rides. Doesn’t matter how easy it is to plan a vacation there if there’s nothing to do when I get there. But I hope you enjoy & have a great vacation!

This is not new. In order to "apply" the discount, there has to be availability as if you were making a new booking. If there is availability, they will be able to apply the discount. Note that for years, Disney has been very selective in what resorts and rooms get discounted. Even when there is availability, many resorts and rooms are excluded - we know because they never come up in the searches with Special Offers. Disney has been only discounting those rooms that they are having a very difficult time selling.

The best way to know is by trying to modify your reservation and see if the discount shows or to make a new reservation. Just having a room does not mean that you will be able to apply a discount. It just means you have a room at the price you booked it.

I agree. We are planning a vacation in January and cannot believe the prices of everything. I am constantly asking myself if I should just cancel the whole thing. So much more money for a vacation here and they give you so much less but they can do this because people, including myself keep coming!

I get it. I used to go at least once a year and sometimes more (when we had APs), and we have not been since July 2020 and have no plans to go back. The value proposition (not just in terms of resorts but the entire vacation experience) is not there for us anymore, compared to other types of vacations.
