Changing last name on deeds

Despite being married for many years, I've not yet got round to changing my last name! We have 5 contracts in total and they're all in my name, am I going to be charged for each contract to change the name on the deeds or is it somehow different if it's a surname change because of marriage?

Thank you

If you really want to legally change your name on a deed, you will need to hire a title company or do it yourself (instructions in the link below). To change your name with DVC and obtain a membership card in your married name you can simply send a copy of your marriage certificate to member services with a request to have your name changed.

Thank you, is it not necessary to change my name on the deed then? I'd assumed I'd have to.

We made a modification through DVC a few years back. I think it cost about $400? You can do it yourself but I didn't want to have to go through all that - I would have been a nervous wreck until it went through!

If you haven’t yet done it and it’s been fine, why do it?

There’s a middle ground of using a company like LT Transfers.

This is what I'm asking, I've not actually changed my name yet, just starting the process now, and I had assumed that I'd HAVE to change the deeds, the first reply I got here is the first inkling I've had that it may not be necessary.

Can I just change my name with MS then with no need to change the deeds?

I wouldn’t bother to change the deeds. Make sure they’re mentioned in any estate planning documents, so they’re not lost.

Just call Member Administration with the change. They'll need a copy of the marriage license emailed to them. My wife did that when we got married, but our original deed still has her maiden name.

Great thank you both :)

For what it’s worth, I hyphenated my name. My DL (I’ve had one in 4 different states through past 20 years), social security card and passport all have hyphenated name. I can have credit cards/bank accounts with any of the three versions legally. 23 years later all original accounts are gone or the bank changed to husband’s last name without me doing anything. Checking and savings accounts documents are hyphenated. All current credit cards are married last name. I assume real estate could be same and maiden name would still be legal.

FYI. You do need to make sure any W-4’s match social security card exactly or your withholding gets messed up. Ask me how I know;)

Thank you, but as I'm English, this means absolutely nothing to me! We don't have social security cards here! Sounds like a nightmare for you though!

Ah, if you’re talking about doing this from the UK, then I definitely wouldn’t bother.
