Changing from SSR to VWL - any chance?

I apologize ahead of time if this is a ridiculous question.

We joined DVC in August 2004 and usually go in the summer, but for family reasons we have to go at a different time this year. We already have reservations for SSR (studio) checking in on 12/23/06 and checking out on 12/31/06. I am thinking about changing from SSR to the Wilderness Lodge villas(studio) or another DVC location, just to try something different.

I know that I need to wait for the 7 month window to even try to change locations. But with the dates that we are going and staying in a studio do I have any realistic chance in changing our reservations from SSR to VWL? or even to another DVC location? Will I most likely be put on the waitlist or should I just forget about it?

Any other suggestions?

I don't mean to sound discouraging, but I wouldn't get my hopes too high to book anything during Christmas Vacation, for any resort, that wasn't booked during the 11 month priority window. But, you won't know until you try...you may get lucky. You've done the right thing, by booking at SSR, so you will have a room for your stay whether or not you can VWL. I would always recommend booking your home resort for that the busy seasons then trying to switch.

I second what Chuck said. Two years ago I had ressies at OKW for Christmas and tried to switch to VWL at 7 months with no luck. Membership has obviously grown so it is more dificult now than it was then. Give it a try and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

BCV and VWL are probably the hardest to get, but that's not to say it can't happen. For a change, you could try OKW or BWV too they are a little larger than VWL.

I would say VWL would be the hardest to get during that time because the Christmas decorations there are SO awesome.

I was just waitlisted yesterday for VWL and it's my home resort. Their studio's are booked. Good luck though you never know

The only way you will ever know is if you get on that phone and waitlist. Waitlist for any of the resorts you might be willing to stay at. You never know what can happen. Your chances aren't high, but who knows.

I'm having this same issue. Our next trip is President's Week next year. I've been telling myself that my next trip I really want to stay at VWL, but I'm thinking it might be unrealistic to try to plan that for a holiday week. I should probably plan for Prez Week to stick with SSR or one of the larger resorts, and plan VWL for a less crowded time of year. What do you guys think?

I'll probably just call at the 7 mo window and see how ugly availability is.

A friend of mine booked several months ago for April 16-20. Since this includes Easter day (another busy season), she wasn't sure what she could get. She asked for OKW (her home resort is BCV) for the entire stay. All she could get was (she's not looking forward to switching resorts all these times, but she's just happy to have gotten anything for this week) :
OKW 4/16
BCV 4/17, 4/18
VWL 4/19, 4/20
SSR/BWV had nothing at all. So, if you waitlist for VWL, I'm thinking a couple of the days might come through, but I'd be suprised if you got your whole stay. If you're willing to change resorts for a change of pace, you might get lucky. But if you're the type that prefers to stay put the entire week I suspect you'll have trouble. I've been waitlisted 2X during the same time period for OKW and it never came through. But in fairness, I got on the waitlist one year 4 months prior and the other only 3 months prior. That's a very busy week, and from what I understand, VWL's Christmas decorations are beautiful, so chances are you won't get it.

But go on the waitlist anyhow...hey, you never know!

Wilderness ressies. So we are hoping to switch at the 7 month window to VWL. Our Break next year will be March 24-31st, what are the odds of successfully switching at that time of the year?

Since Easter will be April 8 next year, I don't think you will have a problem switching at the 7 month mark.

We just got back from VWL and I booked at just over a month out. I think at 7 months with the wait list you should be OK.

Thanks for the feedback. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we can get in at VWL, but if we get our home resort as a back up that isn't the end of the world either. We'll find a way to have fun regardless!
