Changeling - the movie

A changeling is one child substituted for another. In the movie, after the son is kidnapped, the police "find" another child, deliver him to the mom, and insist he is her actual child, even though she knows better. They actually put her in a mental insitution to shut her up because the police department is under so much pressure to solve the case.

The plot of the movie is the very definition of "changeling."

Did you see the movie? The connection between the title and the plot is pretty clear:confused3.

Is "changeling" an official term in some field?

The word "changeling" has had the same meaning since pre-christian times.
If you had a small, dark skinned child some folks thought it was a changeling from the faerie folk that lived in the forests. Basically, one child exchanged for another.

Thanks - I was just going to post that I believe the origin of the word is European folklore.

I don't think it's a term of art in any profession (it is certainly not in law).

Powerful movie, though very sad situation!!!
I looked up on internet afterward.........some interesting things out there....

I think I have heard the term in reference to a "fairy tale" or "folklore" or "science fiction". Did I hear it on a Star Trek episode? I guess I didn't realize it had a place in "reality".

But, I get it now.

I assume you are all talking about the 2008 movie with Angelina Jolie but have you ever seen the 1980 movie also titled "The Changeling" with George C. Scott? It's spooky (and sad).

Don't feel bad. I had no clue what it meant either. :)
Can't say in my 44 years and multiple degrees I have ever run across it.

In the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, one of the main characters, Odo is a shape shifter. Years later, towards the end of the series, Odo finally meets more of his own kind and they refer to themselves as Changelings.

There was also an episode in The Original Series called The Changeling. And on old play written during the Elizabethan era called The Changeling.

I thought the meaning was more commonly known than it appears to be. Clearly, I read a lot of folktales and fairy stories as a child. :rotfl2: There also seemed to be many stories of (fictional) royalty worrying about changelings. We had some OLD books that we'd gotten from a great aunt, who was born just after the Civil War. They were full of old fairy tales and I loved them.

I really like the original Changeling movie with George C. Scott. it scared the heck out of me!
