Okay, short version... I was planning a trip next August, 10 nights at AKL, with a pair of Standard Concierge Level rooms (due to construction, the 1BR suites don't currently exist it seems, lol)... for me, DW, DS6, DD5, DD3, DSInf, and DMIL. Then, just recently, DW points out that if I'm able to pull together all that much extra money, it would probably be better to just use that towards getting our own house, and wait another year before taking the trip. Sadly, that seemed a logic thing to do. Ultimately, she left it up to me to decide, and promised to support whatever decision I made, but at the same time was still disappointed when I told her I canceled the trip.
So I start thinking...
Why not have our cake and eat it too? And why not make it a surprise on top of it? My new plan (DMIL actually helped me a bit with the details, about what dates would work best, etc) is that we'll go for a 5 or 6 night stay at the ASM family suite this spring during one of our kids vacation weeks in April. So, it won't be quite as extravagant accommodations, but still lots of fun, and roughly 1/3 the cost
I'm thinking this will also be a nice way to get a feel for what everyone likes and doesn't like (I haven't been to the world for about 10 years now, so I'm definitely out of touch), and in a lot of ways will make our eventual "big trip" that much easier to plan for.
So, I'm just looking for thoughts/opinions. Tell me if I'm nuts, or whatever. I'm thinking I might let DW and the kids know about this as a Christmas surprise. Enough time that they can all be excited and help plan some stuff, but that I can still get a nice surprise out of it
