Change Jar!!!

We were just looking at our change jars last night. We have one for just pennies and the other for everything else. Where do you turn your change in? I've seen the machines at different places but they take a cut of the money. We tried at DH bank once but they wouldn't take it. Any ideas?

My everyday coin jar is an antique Peter Pan peanut butter tin. (you know it's a can and to open it originally you broke a "key" off the bottom and then threaded the metal strip around the top into it and turned the key to open the can. The lid would then fit back into the top til you finished the peanut butter) I throw all my change into that till it's full then I seperate out the pennies for my mom (she filled a 5 gallon water jug with them and we lugged those pennies to the bank to the tune of 300 dollars, so now she's started over she also has a large apothocary jar for her silver, but I only give her pennies LOL) my silver coins I put into a Disney popcorn bucket to use towards my Jan 2010 trip.

Before that I just rolled them and stuck them in my savings. I've always saved change. Started with my granddad (depression era adult) who taught my mom (my dad was in construction and those coins supplemented our groceries during low work months) me who just likes knowing that I'm filling up my savings or cash paying for a treat, my brother who does it even though he is an executive that doesn't need to count pennies, and my nephews who already has figured out that hoarding cash is a great way to get what they wants. Parents say no and they counter with, well what if I pay for it myself. When the boys were small they used to shake us all down for the change in our pockets so they could go fill their piggy banks. LOL Now it's just a family tradition.

I was told by some one a while ago that a 5-gal water jug filled with only pennies is about 300$. She did a school fundraiser asking for pennies...

Change is a legal tender of money, no place can actually deny you paying with change, but they can be pains when wanting to convert it to bills. Just make sure you roll it first. I have a nifty little thing, it's four plastic tubes that fill exactly to what you need for a roll. So after I sort it, then I just dump it in there, and there's a slot at the top so you just tip it and anything more than a roll will fall out. Then I stick the tube down it and close the change in.
Paper rolls are really really cheap, you can get them practically anywhere, usually where you find filing cabinet stuff at like wal-mart.

If TD had that going on when Kari was a kid (and you could get more than just 10$) she would've been a very very rich kid. Her teachers used to compain that she'd stay in the classroom to read a book rather than go out and play.

We just rolled $135 for our beach vacation (our best yet - usually it's about $75.) My son and I roll it every year as part of our vacation tradition and we took our rolls to Wachovia. Maybe your bank would take it if you rolled it first.

Whereever you are planning on cashing it in call them first. My old bank would not accept it if i wasn't rolled. My current credit union has a counting machine and won't accept rolled.

OK. . . how frightening is it that now I am even more excited for my December trip so I can get a plastic popcorn bucket, lug it around, pack it up in the luggage, haul it home . . . so I can use it for a change bucket to save for my NEXT Disney trip! :rotfl: I think I may need help. ;)

No I was thinking the same thing...better then the 2 rubbermade bowls we are using now.

If anyone else has a family member who likes to sneak change out...this is what I've started doing.

Instead of just having a jar with loose change in it, I have those little snack ziplok baggies...one for each type of coin. I got little pseudo-post-it notes and put one in each baggie. When I put money into the jar, I actually keep track of what's going in there. Once a baggie gets a roll-full, I roll it and put it into the jar without the baggie. Mark off what date I did a roll on the post-it, if there was anything over the roll I mark that too, and the baggie goes back in. That way I know how much rolled coin is in there, and the person in my household who wants to sneak it out would have to copy my writing, and if he started doing THAT, well, we'd have bigger problems than just coins!

Truth be told, I snuck out money once or twice too, and for some reason this method has been VERY helpful for us.

At DLR, if you lose your AP you have to pay $20 to get a replacement (unless it's stolen, but then you have to file a police report and bring a copy of the report to get that replacement for free). Hubby lost his and DS's APs. So in May, my goal was simply change enough to replace those. I ended up with twice that amount. I only took the coin that was rolled to turn into dollars, and left the rest in the baggies. Now I'm up to about $40 again, just in rolled coin.

So it's working pretty well! :)

We are leaving for Disney on Saturday. I brought my change jar in to the bank today to cash it in. I was hoping there would be at least $40 to fill our 8 nights worth of Mousekeeping envelopes. There was $86.32!! Woo hoo! I now also have enough for my bell services tip plus a Mickey bar or two!!!

Maggie

Great job Maggie! We had about $40 for our trip, but that was only a mugful of change. Have fun!

We do this at our house too! We go to WDW every other year and it is a highly anticipated event on the day that we count out our money. It has become a family affair around here. We use a dog treat jug that you used to be able to get at Sams. We have it decorated with pictures that we made with our Disney Graphics program and always change the date to reflect the year we are going. Can't wait to count it out this year. We went on a cruise last summer and all the money that I won playing penny slots is in the jar so we have a bonus this time.

No more frightening than me. I already have 4 buckets from our last trip (one from each park) and I am excited to get 4 more. Since each bucket roughly hold 300.00 I figured if I can save the change in 8 jars I may be able to take a trip without having to actually save for one.

I just have to mention that I read in a magazine about a woman who put all of her $5.00 bills in a box and every once and awhile she would make a deposit in the bank. After a year she had saved a bit over $2700.00!!! I think I am going to have to try that!:thumbsup2

DH keeps a change jar and usually ends up with over $300 every year!

Grumpy'swife---that is so funny! I love your box.

We have a large, glass jar for change. It's so big, it takes years to fill it. We estimate it holds about $600. (emptied it once when it wasn't quite full and it contained a little over $500)

I really like the box idea better though. I can't add dollars to the glass jar because I'd see them, know they were there and could easily get them. I can't be trusted!

I love change jars and have been doing them for years. I usually use the money for something "special" like the Rainforest Room on the cruise, or a special dinner. :)

My mom gave our son the cutest present a couple of years ago. It's one of those large water cooler jugs (glass) and she had her friend paint Mickey Mouse with a suitcase (which has my DS name on it) and he's walking towards Cinderella's castle....across the top it says "Our Disney Vacation". We love watching it fill up, and we are always amazed how much $ we have collected once we roll our coins. :cool1:

I agree with calling your bank, some will take only rolled coin and some only loose.

I am loving everyones ideas and how great they are at saving the coins.

I too am one that if I see someone has dropped money or left it in pockets it goes to the Disney fund. We also never leave money on the ground that others drop, it immediately goes to the Disney jar too.

Even my brother handed me a dollar bill once, he found it while shopping, told me to put it in our Disney jar.

I have several bills in our jug. singles to twenties, and even when we're trying to scrape enough just to get a bit of gas, we have yet to touch it. Although we've been guilty of taking out some for tolls (when we lived on the other side of the airport and had no choice but two toll roads) before we got a sun pass.

Change jars rock!! Here is MY version, kind of a change jar on steroids.... I asked my DH to make me a solid wooden box with a slot in the top....I can't get into it without having to dig for tools.....So the money is VERY safe because I don't go out into DH's shop if I can help it!
Here is the box as he presented it to me Christmas of 2007 (along with the Mickey and Minnie figurine :lovestruc)

And here is how it looked March of 2009 when we cracked it open....this was our souvenir and snack money, and we ended up with PLENTY! :cool1:
