Change in Mission Space

I rode M:S for the first time in January, 2004. It was very intense, and I felt quite woozy afterward.

I tried it again later in the year, and it was much, much less intense. I didn't feel any ill effects, but I didn't enjoy it, either. The second time around was pretty dull.

I think I'd prefer woozy over dull, but I can understand why they toned it down.

Dh rode MS in 12/03. He didn't get sick when he rode it but was ambivalent about doing it again even though he liked it. We went to WDW two times this year and he didn't want to ride again.

So, did the change happen after 12/03?

So many people I know have been worried by the warnings... my wife and I included! :rotfl2: We were both fine... in fact, when the ride was over, I was waiting for more... :confused3

We can definitely attest to the fact that they toned it down. We rode it during its soft opening period (July of 2003), and I remember my vision going a bit blurry during the take-off part. I was a bit hesitant to ride it the next year we went, but I noticed that it was far less intense. Still very enjoyable, but with less uncomfortableness (yay for making up words!). :) We actually had a bus driver tell us that Gary Sinese himself was pretty woozy after riding it!

I've read that Mission Space has a 2 man staff in charge of cleaning up vomit within and around the ride!! All I know is that im totally NEVER going on that ride! :sad2:

I have ridden MS 3 times and every time I did everything the instructions said you shouldn't do if you wanted to avoid feeling dizzy or queasy. I leaned forward, I looked to the side, and I looked away from the monitor. The ride still didn't annoy me at all. I think MS gets too much negative publicity from posts such as this. Sure there are people who suffer motion sickness from spinning rides like MS, but these unfortunate people already know they can't handle this type of ride. IMHO these kinds of MS bashing posts stop people from even trying the ride. BTW my DW is one of the people that can't ride MS, although she rode it once  just to experience it.

I have read that older people have been taken to the hospital after riding MS. Since they have toned it down a bit has this still been happening. When we went last year I would not let me 74 year old monther ride this ride. She rode everything else and had no promble with anyother ride.

I rode it last year & the year before w/ my 86 y/o father! We had a BLAST! It was so much fun my dad couldn't wait to ride it the next day w/ the Grandkids :jumping3:

My mom (74) was upset that she had to stay behind and watch dd(3). Next year she swears is HER year to ride! Go Grammy! :cool1:

I am glad that I didn't read this thread or others about MS before. Otherwise, I would never had ridden MS last December. I had to ride without my DW (she thinks the drop in POC is almost too much). I ended up being the "engineer". I have to say the only weird sensation from the centrifuge during blast off lasted only seconds with no after effects for me. They must have really "toned it down" since the opening. The CM's at the entrance try to shake you by telling you that the standby wait is only a few minutes except for the occasional delay for what they called "cleanup of biologicals". :)

I know I was one of the 60% that puked on it.
 I too got sick, but I did get a sick bag and got sick outside. Had to go to first aid and rest for an hour. NEVER AGAIN.

Yeah but I rode it during the soft opening and didn't get sick but when I rode it this past summer I felt like I was going to die I was so sick.

HockeyChick - I get sick when I ride Star Tours, Back to the Future, and the like. I won't go near the Teacups. I even get sick when I'm at some movies, like an Omni-theater, or some of those "Circle 360" movies at EPCOT. I've also had sinus infections and inner ear problems. So I had the same concerns about riding MS, but I really wanted to try it.
I tried it last year when we were there, and had no problems. I was very happy for the cool air blowing on my face. I even rode it a second time, right after the first time. You won't know how your body will react unless you try it. (I rode it on a practically empty stomach, right before our PS's for the Princess Storybook Breakfast.)

Thanks for the info!! Maybe I'll try it out. The motion simulators are the only rides that ever make me feel crappy and I've never actually buicked after/on a ride. All the warnings on the signs just scared me off last year.

Right before breakfast is a really good idea, too. Then you can sit down and cool off for a while if you feel icky. Thanks again!

I love Mission Space! Just looking straight ahead seems to combat the dizzying effect for me.
However, I can't ride the Tea Cups (don't even get me started on Storm Force at Islands of Adventure)
without feeling like I'm going to lose my lunch!
I wonder if it's because my brain is getting all that outside stimuli?
A while ago, DD4 and I went to MK and she loves the Tea Cups, so I forced myself to ride them.
I focused on her with my digital camera (took some really cute pictures) and it seemed to help a lot!
I still won't ride those unless I have to, but looking at a focal point really helped.
I'm so glad that I can ride M:S without getting too woozy - My DS6 (my middle child daredevil) loves it, too!
That being said, it only made sense for the ride to be toned down to allow more people to ride it without getting sick.
I'd hate to be the CM's assigned to the "barf detail" - Do they get paid extra for that? YUCK!!

From what I have been told is that Disney issued a statement to employees saying that all rumors of MS being toned down were totally false.
