I just spoke with my sister, who will be joining us on our trip this week (we leave Maine on Wednesday!). She says that when they were in WDW last spring, a CM told her if they wanted to use their "old" PH passes (from a trip 3 yrs. ago) they would have to pay an additional amount of $$ to enter the park as pass prices have increased since they purchased these passes. I thought that passes were good "forever", and you could use unused days for either admittance to a park (with no additional cost) or use the cash value of them, based on original purchase price, towards the purchase of a new pass. Has there been a change in policy, or did my DSis misunderstand?

Boy that sure doesn't sound right!!! The only time you sould be paying a difference between then and now is if you were upgrading the passes. I certainly hope that CM didn't know what she was talking about (like we've never run into that before;) )

I was just there with my niece and she used a pass I bought three years ago before the price increase. She had no problem.

It could be a case of your sister misunderstanding or it could be a case of a Disney CM giving out the incorrect information.

Either way, you won't have to pay anything additional to use left over days on old passes.

Generally it is better to use up the days on an old hopper pass without trading it in towards a new pass with more days.

Used as is, the old pass keeps its value in days. Traded in it only has value in yesteryears' purchase price towards today's ticket prices.

Also, if you ask a question and the answer does not seem right, ask another person for a second opinion.

I bet I know; was it possible that this person wanted to go to Animal Kingdom and since AK is a newer park, if you have hopper passes that were bought before the AK, you would have to buy a separate AK pass - you can't use really old passes for the AK park but you can use them for the others.

The CM may have been right at the time. After AK opened, you were not supposed to be able to use an old PH pass at AK. I thought I remembered this so I confirmed it in an old 2001 guide book. I have read that since then Disney has abandoned that policy and you can use the older PH at any of the parks.

They have eliminated that restriction and you can use your left over passes purchased before AK for admission to that park.

When we were in WDW in early 1999, we went to AK and had to "exchange" our passes for newer ones (apparently the bar code wouldn't work in the turnstiles). We did not have to pay anything extra for them ... they just took the number of days left on our passes and put that same number of days on the newer ones. I think this was another case of a CM giving out misinformation

We were always told that guests would have to pay an additional fee to upgrade park hopper passes if another park was added...(ie...AK). Also we were always told that you would have to upgrade if your child--using a "child" pass reached the Adult/Guest level 10+ yrs.

Now what guest service does to enforce this...I don't know...heck, I think I have a ticket from the 15 year celebration that I won!!!! :)

But anyway, that's just my 2 cents....

I used an old pass (from '97, I think) on Jan. 4th, 5th, and 6th with no problems. I think we went into AK, MK and Epcot. This pass was and All-in-One, so you know it was pretty old!;)

You are absolutely correct, and when AK did open you did have to pay, well that did not go over well and AK attendance was low, so, they dropped that restriction (there were signs everywhere) and simply exchanged old passes for new ones that would allow admittance to the park.

Children's passes are and have always been a free upgrade when the child "outgrows" his child's pass.

the only time there is an addition cost is if the child has matured to an "adult".

Actually, if the pass has been used and the child "matures to an adult" they change it to an adult pass at no charge.

From Deb's site, which address this very issue.

I bought a child's ticket for my son/daughter last time I was at Walt Disney World. There are still unused park admissions on that child's ticket but my child is now well past the 10 year old adult ticket level. Can I do anything about these days?

Disney does not penalize children for growing up. You can take your leftover child's pass along with your now too old child (the child must be present to do this) to any Guest Relations window or major park ticket booth. They will update that child's pass to an adult one with exactly the same leftover admissions. There is no charge for this.
