Chances of upgrade with SPG?

Hi, I booked a standard room at the Dolphin for August 04. What are the chances for an upgrade with the SPG card... any upgrade, nicer room, club level, etc.? Will they do it automatically or do you have to ask? I guess it depends on how crowded the hotel is at the time, huh?

Yes, it depends on how crowded the hotel is to begin with......also depends on the 'type' of crowd that is there that week. For example, if there's a large business convention that has a lot of frequent travelers, there is a greater likelihood that Starwood Gold or Platinum members are among them. They get upgrades first. Also, you can trade SPG points for guarenteed upgrades so you'd be in line behind them. That being said, if it's a slow week, you could still get lucky.

It also depends if you used a discount website to book your room or not. Starting 01/01/04 if you booked using certain discount websites you will not get any SPG benifits.

We have been upgraded for free twice. Once at the Swan in May I had used cash and points and had emailed a request for a nice view. We were upgraded to a balcony overlooking the central lagoon/ lake. It was beautiful. The second time was in June in Vancouver BC. I had used priceline and again emailed for a nice view. Wwe were again upgraded to a king with a view this time of the harbour. We did not receive any spg points for this stay but both times were treated extremely well and not just with the upgrade.
