Chances of getting an upgrade?

Just wondering what my chances are of getting an upgrade? I reserved a Cat. 12 over 7 months ahead of time in hopes of getting an upgrade. AAA did ask Disney if I would be getting an upgrade and they said it was very possible.

How true is this?

Conventional Wisdom says you should book the category you would be comfortable cruising in because upgrades are rare, indeed. There have been many discussions on the topic and the results of polls show the upgrade rate at something like only 2%.

There is a thread a little lower on this page started by FredS which polls the frequency of upgrades from category 12. There is also some discussion on that thread as well as a reference to a previous thread discussing it.

All that being said, we booked GTY11 in September for our March criuise and have been upgraded to Category 9.

There is really no way to predict upgrades. We've had them on 2 of our 9 cruises. September is not a crowded cruise month, making it more possible to have upgrades then.

It really doesn't seem to be based on when you made ressies or anything sensible. We've booked 18 months out and not gotten one. I've seen people book and get an upgrade within 8 hours! For us, one was at the port when we checked in, on another the TA called and said one had been offered a couple weeks before sailing.

The key is to book a cabin where you will be happy, then consider an upgrade as a gift if it comes your way.

Chances of getting an upgrade? I would say Slim to None. That's not to say they don't happen. If 2% of rooms are upgraded, then that means about 17 rooms per sailing. Not the best odds, but much better than the lottery!
