Challah bread, do you buy it or make it yourself? 🍞 ✡️ 🇮🇱

OK, so if it's a basic braided challah, I usually just buy it. Platting is not my thing.

Now, if it's for Rosh Hashanah, it should be homemade. It's not that you can't buy one, but your Rosh Hashanah challah should be round. There's a superstition that the rounder your homemade Rosh Hashanah challah turns out, the better (i.e. well rounded) your year will be). I cheat if I'm going to do the whole High Holy Days things. There's a brand that sells frozen raw braided challahs. I usually buy two, let them thaw and rise once before I try and form them into something round before a second rise and baking.

I make round challah every year, it’s a must for the holiday. I also do the schlissel (key shaped) challah after Pesach. And in regards to the frozen challah, as my mother always says, if you heat in an oven it’s homemade lol

I haven’t but one of kids made a few times. 2 batches of regular and 2 of chocolate. All were impressive! Challah may be Jewish but challah is also a NJ Diner thing. The bakers all used to make it to serve as dinner bread and for the French Toast.

I am not but my husband is and I usually buy it but last night I made my own‼️. First batch didn’t rise so I made a pizza out of the dough after rolling it flat. I was determined and second time it rose and was pretty tasty but want to try other recipes.
