Chalkboard paint? Anyone use it before?

I am in the process of fixing up the guest room. There is one area where the previous owner had cut a huge hole into the drywall to put up a display area. The area in the guest room has a plain board blocking where the hole is cut. I plan on using chalkboard paint to cover the plain board.

My goal is to move DS out of his smaller bedroom and what is currently the guest room will be his new bedroom because it is larger and he has so much stuff!

Has anyone used chalkboard paint? Did it work as expected? From what I read online, you need to do a thin coat to start and then 2 or 3 thicker coats.

Right now I am still trying to fix the board area underneath - it is somewhat of a hot mess, but definitely fixable (and lucky for me I totally LOVE doing home renovation stuff).

But I am hoping to do the chalkboard paint thing next week. Any advice?

Yes, it does work pretty well. Be careful with your strokes as you will be able to see them. Start thin as they say but go with 3 thicker coats as it will still look very light. It's a un transition to any room!

Thanks! I was going to start with a thin layer using a foam brush, and then for the last coats I was going to use a foam roller. Glad to know firsthand that it works good!

I painted a 4'X5" plywood board with both the magnetic paint then covered it with the chalkboard paint. A few tips would be to make sure to prime the board first just so the paint wont soak in and it wont take as many coats. We ended up doing 3 coats of the magnetic paint then 5 of the chalkboard paint before it looked and felt "right" even then it could have used one more coat , we just ran out of paint at that point. My biggest issue is it a pain to clean and always ends up with the greyish left over chalk look to it. Good luck!

Chalkboard paint, never heard of it haha.
Guessing the paint is like chalk :o?

I probably shouldn't have said plain board - the board has been painted a few times.

Good to know. Home Depot has a 30oz can of the paint for $10 - that is where I plan on buying it.

I am jealous. I've always wanted an excuse to use chalkboard paint somewhere in my house. People I know who have used it have always raved about it and said it's great. I just need to know if they make it in dry erase too!

I used chalkboard paint on the kitchen pantry door. I bought it in an aerosol spray can from Walmart. Took two coats. Chalk erases fine. Every once in a while, I wipe it down with a wet rag, wait for it to dry and wipe away any chalky residue left. So practical for our family...we write reminders, appointments, grocery lists- and the kids doodle, play hangman....
I love the stuff!

They do make dry erase... look at Home Depot/Lowes.

I used it when painting DD's room. I think I ended up doing 3 coats. It works very well. Everytime she has friends over, they end up writing on the wall. Her little sister likes it too. I used the wall her door is on and there's only a foot or so on either side of the door. LOVE IT!

This has my interest piqued. We have a French themed kitchen and I was interested but also concerned about using this type of paint in the kitchen. Does it tend to create a ton of chalk dust, average to the normal amount you'd expect, or less? I'd be concerned about chalk getting all over our kitchen, hahaha.

No more than normal, with normal use. Now, when my girls used it as their art canvas...they would need to sweep the chalk dust up that would accumulate on the floor, right at the base of the door.

No - the paint is the green/black colour of a chalkboard. You are creating a chalkboard on the wall by using the paint.

At home depot they had several colors to choose from. I made a pink chalkboard in DD's room. I built a platform bed for DD with a clubhouse underneath. I used the chalkboard paint to paint the inside of the clubhouse. It's a lot of fun for her and her friends and all the chalk mess is contained inside so it's win, win!
