Certain kinds of stupidity really irk me

A "racial slur" cost an overly confidant woman her job!!!

Quite a few years back, I was the Assistant Director Of Nurses at a medical facility in NC. I was interviewing nurses for a position we had open. First lady who interviewed with me was a sweet, very personable Afro-American lady. She had very little work experience, however, and I really was hoping for someone with a great deal more.

Next to be interviewed was a white woman who had seen the Afro-American lady leaving my office. She made a remark concerning her that included a "racial slur". I happen to be white also, and apparently this made her feel safe in doing so. She had lots and lots of work experience and good references. Did she get the open position? Absolutely not!!!! I chose the lady with less experience but with an ability to show compassion and kindness. I felt we didn't need anyone with a negative attitude to add to our already overpowering problems! ::yes::

The "like" minds thing goes both ways, too. I just started a new job and my receptionist, who is also African American as I am, made a remark about a white co-worker that she thought I would agree with. I quickly let her know that she would not be getting an AMEN from me and the subject was never brought up again.

Misery loves company...

I was waitressing in Ohio and a woman stopped me and proceeded to tell me how my interacial dating was discusting. She went on to say that I was beautiful and I was wasting my life on an ugly nasty boy. She even pulled out a bible and showed me where it says that we need to "stick to our kind."

I politely told her that I could not gaurentee that I would not spit in her food if I served her and I needed to get her another waitress.

I thought it was all of the "Bible Belt"...but I know what you mean. Racial slurs even if thought..should NEVER be shared!

really irks me as well. was recently in Jackson ms a few days after an african american gentleman with the same last name as mine was elected to some position,, was going into preop holding area when i heard the nurses discussing the name similarity and wonderin if the guy coming in was related to the one elected,,,, they did not know i was htat guy,, i am white,, i listened a min or two then spoke up and told them i might be i do have relitives that are black. should have seen the reaction i got,, until one very well respected lady walked up to me,, verified the name matched and said thank you. my great grandparents were a mixed cpl too.. and they wasnt married either,,, but her family like most of mine refuises to admit the connection, so i promise you not all young southern white men think that way. only those select few who refuse to admit the fact that most plantation owners had more forced girl friends than not,, granted there were several that were not that way, and some that treated al ppl equal even back before the civil war,,, but not nearly as many as there are today that want to run mouth with out brains input.

I have lived in the South, MidWest, and Northwest, and have heard awful things from each region. Unfortunately, uneducated racist bigots live all over the country (and the world). I guess the only thing you can do is let them know you don't appreciate those words and slurs, and consider the source, and try to get on with your life.

I had an encounter with a woman once who told me an extremely offensive "joke" about the work ethic of various races and nationalities. She thought that because I was the same race as her, I would "get" the joke and laugh. I was so stunned that those words were spewing from her mouth, I just stared at her, mouth agape. She then told me not to be "so touchy" and that the joke was just "all in fun". I think I never actually said anything to her- too freaked out. Wish I had gone back to her and given her a piece of my mind!!

Not all Southerners are like that- just the stupid jerk a-- losers!!!

It happens everywhere, not just the South. I am a long standing student of the Civil War. Believe me when I say most people these days who wave the Rebel flag and make racial slurs could not tell you what the war was really all about. Ignorance is bliss!!
And that statement is not meant to offend anyone here. It is directed towards those who make racial comments and the such.

I personally look at life this way. God created all of us in His image. We are all equal in His eyes but I agree here on earth we are not treated equal. Some rich people snub poor people. That is inequality. That is but one example........the list goes on and on. My take on it is this...dont group people together...take each person as they are. Each person has a spirit, a soul and they are unique, God made each one of us as individuals but wants us to work together for the betterment of mankind.

OK, Im through preaching now;)

another thing to remember is that when mikkey and awlt started shopping for a full tme vacation home they chose t he south too:) it does have redeaming qualities see:)

:( Shannon, I know what you mean. I am sure it does happen all over. What gets to me personally is when they start ranting about "damn yankees" and I am one! Usually they quickly remember I am from NJ and they start with the ol' "oh I don't mean you". If they don't remember I remind them and watch them turn :o .

But racial comments are far worse than that. Good for you for letting them know what you think.

And where in the Bible does it talk about "staying with you own kind"?

Brenda, I totally don't understand the feelings of hostility directed towards yankees down here either. I guess people are so insecure they feel they must poke fun at people that aren't exactly like them. I must be poked fun of all the time.;)
