Centralized FastPass

Disney currently is testing the concept of centralized FastPass station at Animal Kingdom. When I visited yesterday afternoon, there were six machines in operation in the area that once was the FastPass distribution area for It's Tough to Be a Bug. Three attractions were available at two stations apiece. You could get passes for Dinosaur, Expedition Everest and the Kilimanjaro Safaris. You could still get FastPasses at those individual attractions as well.

Remember, this is a test and a work in progress. Certainly, signage would be better and it would be listed on guide maps were it to become reality.

Another bugaboo, to me, was that you could not tell what time you were going to get BEFORE you put your ticket into the machine or what the current wait time was at that attraction. (The cast member there was happy to tell me the times it was currently distrubting, but that's labor-intensive.).

I liked that the machines were designated by logo of the attraction, although the Dino Institute design doesn't scream DINOSAUR like the Everest or Safaris signs. And they were low to the ground and hard to see if someone were actually using the machine.

FastPass is confusing enough to newbies, and the cast members spent a lot of time there explaining how it works and how this test is working. Of course, there were people trying to get FastPasses for It's a Bug's Life there still.

I got a FastPass for Everest, and it told me to arrive at 12:40 p.m. I think walked over to Everest, which took five minutes or so, and the FastPasses there were being distributed for 12:55. Made sense.

I'm not a huge FastPass fan, though my fellow Rangers can't live without it. What exactly Disney is testing for is not clear. However, a front-line cast member pal of mine is totally in favor of centralizing FastPass. He says he spends untold hours at the entrance explaining to guests how FP works (and measuring the height of kids, but that's another problem, one that he wants to wristband kids for.).

What do you think? Would centralization help or cause an even bigger logjam? Or do you believe something ELSE is in the works? Would you allow Disney to put a chip in your head? Discuss.

Honestly I find this worse than charging for fastpasses. Each park has a hub which is already pretty busy. Centralizing fastpasses will promote further laziness and further laziness among guests will promote irratibility in the lines.

I find the current set up fine because you shouldnt be able to not go to an attraction to "cut" in line for it. Thats the good thing about the current system. You have to choose which is more important, Ride A or Ride B. No matter how organized it seems, if this hits main stream there will be one large stampede to the central fastpass area instead of several smaller stampedes to spread out attractions.

The beauty of the current way is you have to actually work and somehow interact with the long line before you get a fastpass (i.e. at least look at the wait time at the attraction itself) and you dont have to worry about the rest of the park being at the same attraction because the fastpasses are not together they are at each attraction spread out around the park.

I too like the idea of keeping fast passes more directly linked to the rides. Hate the concept of being able to buy fast passes. Very un-Disney.

Anything to stop having to step over people like this. I took this picture on my phone hence the poor quality.

To be honest I have never liked the current FP scheme as it involves far too much time wasting. Maybe a central FP station is not the best idea but I think if you had 6 machines at every location 2 could be used to say get tickets for any attraction.

You get into AK, what do you do? Lets say you want to get a FP for Everest first so you walk there. The your next fave ride is the Safari so you walk all the way to there but you have to wait in the normal queue because you have FP for Everest. This queue is now 45mins long. You can't really win with this system, you are either walking or queueing.

Much better I think if you walked to Everest got a FP there for the Safari then waited in the queue for Everest got off walked to the Safari and you are done.... less time in queues more time spending money in the shops for Disney. :D

All youre describing is a day at a theme park, walking or queueing. A fastpass in my opinion is a privilege. You seem to want to get a fastpass for everything and not wait much. While that is the goal of many, fastpass is meant to allow people to literally save their place in line essentially if thought through. You have to go the attraction and if you dont want to wait in line you get a fastpass. Two three hours later you go and wait about half the time you would have.

About the reference to waiting in line for the safari, exactly. You got the fastpass for Everest so you could stand in line for another attraction until your fastpass is valid. If you really wanted to ride the safari then wait in line because odds are by the time you get off the ride your Everest fast pass still wont be ready, unless a lion is in the middle of the road on Kilamanjaro.

I laughed at your signature because the girls in the picture were actually part of a Brazilian tour group.

Oh good grief! Please don't mention those Brazilian tour groups. :scared:

The pic of all the girls on the ground behind the chain--where was that taken? That looks insane!

I agree with DizCaptain. The current system works fine and the central FP area will only create more congestion.

The picture was taken on thursday of last week at Universal Studios
