Forgetting the beach itself, which is nicer, newer, more to do (fishing, oceanview seafood restaurants, boardwalk atmosphere and size, family atmosphere) ?

I've been to Daytona beach 8 times and Cocoa Beach once. I think that should answer your question.
Hotel and entertainment selection is much better in Daytona.
There are times of the year to avoid Daytona, unless you fit in one of the groups below...
Early March and October (Bikers take over)
Mid Feb. and Early July (NASCAR fans take over)
Early April (Black college reunion week.)
Mid Mar - Early April (Spring break - college kids.)
