Cell Phones In Fl

We've been living in Florida for a month now and have not been happy with our cell phone coverage. We have Verizon Wireless and I thinkk that guy on the commercial never got here to ask if they can hear him now...

We had great coverage up in NY, but down here in Central Florida we usually lose a call after a few minutes, signalled by three quick beeps. We never had this problem with the same phones and service while at WDW, but we're about 57 miles North of there. I had the phones switched to Florida numbers and roaming base, but this still happens. I see a local dealer advertises Verizon Wireless, but a few people have suggested Sprint or T-Mobile are better here. Personally, I could live without a cell phone now, but they seem to be a necessary evil in this day and age.

Has anyone had similar problems? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I have Cingular in Orlando and don't have a problem.

I had T mobile, but switched to AT&T to get a corporate rate. T mobile was great, Cingular has been very good. If given the chance, I'd go back to T mobile, as I get a lot more "your call cannot be completed" messages. Not a huge amount, but enough to be annoying.

Yup! Here's how you fix it... Your cell is programmed to pick up signals from local towers. But it doesn't always know which towers to look for when you are in a different area than "home". You need to dial *228 on your cell (this is for Verizon, don't know about others) and then hit send, then listen, it will tell you what you need to do to find new towers in yoru area.

I have Cingular on my personal cell phone and T-Mobile on my work cell and both work fine.

Thank you for posting the info. I've been meaning to call Verizon to ask them how to do that. :)

No problem. I do it every couple months regardless of where I am just to locate any new towers for optimum service.

My sister's place is just a couple of miles down the road from The Villages and when I visted there last year I had no problems whatsoever with my Nextel phone.. Worked in Lady Lake, worked in Disney, worked in Vero Beach, worked in Port St. Lucie.. I never did anything to connect with a different tower because it wasn't necessary.. On the other hand, my sister has Verizon and is continually being cut off or losing service - even after her son made the necessary adjustments.. :confused3

I did that and it doesn't seem to help. We still get cut off. It sounds like T-Mobile might be the way to go. Thanks for all the input!
