Guess it depends on why you have a cell phone and exactly what your use it for. If always on silent, not sure the point of having one. When at home, I set the phone down on the counter and will see if I missed a call after the fact. When out in public, there are some places liked doctor/dentist offices where it isn't practical to have/use your phone. If I was having my teeth cleaned, I would likely leave the phone at home or in my car, since clearly you can't chat on the phone at that time!!!

It matters less to me what others choose to do and is more a function of how I am using the phone. Things like calls, text messages or emails are different uses for a cellphone. If you have a home phone vs a cellphone do you give out either/both numbers to friends or relatives?

Mine is on vibrate all the time for everything. The only time I hear my ringer is when I get a call in the car and it comes through the Bluetooth on the radio. My husband is on call 24/7 for work so his ringer is on all the time (except of course when it would be inappropriate for it to ring) but it vibrates for notifications.

Cell phones can ring? hahah!

Mine has been on silent for years. Sometimes if I'm expecting a call and I'm worried I'll miss the vibration on my watch I'll turn the sound on. It might vibrate for calls/texts? But I honestly don't even know. Most of my notifications come through my watch, which vibrates (I think it's called a haptic on the watch...)

No point having it if it doesn't ring for a call or make a noise for a text.

I think with technology now, a lot of iPhone users have their cell phone connected to a smart watch. I know that has helped me a lot with not missing any calls/texts with my phone on silent.

Yeah, my daughter has a watch liked to her Android phone.

I think mine is pretty much whatever it was set at out of the box. I haven't changed much of it as far as I know.

I have sound for my phone ringing and for texts - everything else is silent.

I work in a factory. Very loud. I seek out the loudest tone I can find and have the volume on max. I still will pull the phone from my pocket to use the calculator or camera and be surprised I have 3 or 4 texts that I didn't hear.

I have everything on vibrate. It usually makes enough noise for me to notice without bothering people around me. When I'm working I keep it out on my desk (since covid I've had work calls forwarding to my cell, so the desk phone doesn't even ring).

Always on vibrate. I get notifications on my fitbit so I know when I'm getting calls, text messages or snapchats. I hate notifications so I don't turn them on for anything else.

My kids texts are set to sound no matter what, even my do not disturb while I sleep. Otherwise it depends on the circumstance. If I have my phone in my pocket it’s usually silent/vibrate. If it’s in my purse then all alert tones are on (unless I need it to be silent ie at a concert).

Silent, always. I work in a professional environment where it would be really inappropriate to have my phone make a noise. I have an iPhone and and Apple Watch, so when my phone rings it vibrates my wrist and I know.

Mine is on for calls and texts, but I never have the volume more than halfway up..my loud is VERY loud! Hubby has his on for everything, well at least he did while he was working, he retired last Friday, so his phone has been very quiet, lol. But he wasn't feeling that great Saturday when we were out doing errands, so he waited in the car. I needed to ask him something, so I called..and called,,and called. Left 2 voice mails, Texted, emailed, all with no answer. I got worried enough that I took my cart to the service desk, told her I would be back..and went out to the car. Had to hunt for it as I had no idea where he had parked. He was on his phone playing a game, but somehow had hit 'airplane mode', which silenced everything. He had texted me where he was parked, and until he turned the airplane mode back off,,nothing came thru. Then all of my calls, texts and emails went off at once, lol! Now I have to make sure to tell him to check it when I am in one place and he is in another!

Thanks for all the replies sorry for the delay in getting back here!

This is more of a spread than I thought it would be. More people saying vibrate all than I expected

I would say that 90% of the time my phone is on silent, but still vibrates.
Since my apple watch is tied to my phone I don't need the phone to ring because I can see the phone's activity on my wrist.
