cell phone only?

Like many of you we have discussed this many times. My husband wants to have only cell phones, but I won't budge. Durring hurricane Ivan we lost cell service for several days, but our land line worked just fine. All of my family lives about 1000 miles away, and the land line was the only way I could reach them to let them know we were ok. I also had trouble getting in touch with my boss and co-workers to check in. I just have very basic service and we don't use it much, but I won't even consider getting rid of it. Good luck on your decision.

same here- until you have been through something like this you wouldnt know. Guess its peace of mind now for me. so I spend the $40 a month on my land line. It was our saving grace a few years back. we keep a old plug in phone in the garage for various emergencies and it has come in handy. cell phone are not always reliable.

About a month ago we went cell only, sort of. We unplugged the phones but left the service and the answering service on. We said we would try it for a month. We do not want to disconnect totally without trying it out. We have had a few messages. One was an off the wall call where my son had been being silly and a neighbor called to tell us. Child not in trouble, neighbor enjoyed watching the silliness. Another was the school calling, in which they have the cells but tried home first. That is taken care of, called to be sure to use cell #'s only.
It is like moving though. You need to let the dr.'s offices know and that sort of thing.

Oopss, rambling.
I say try it for a month like we have. Just unplug the phones and see how it goes. Maybe leave them plugged in but turned off with an answering machine/service to make you feel better about missed calls.

Good luck, it took us a while to step over athe edge as well. ;)

That's EXACTLY why I had my cell phone company transfer my landline number to my cell phone so that I wouldn't have to contact everyone. To be honest, I haven't gotten many calls in the last 6 months.

I was sad to see my cell phone number go, we had a family plan (4 phones - DH, me and my parents) and the numbers were consecutive. But LOTS more people called my DH's cell and my parents and I don't live together, so it was the most logical one to give up my cell number.

I just had to let close friends and family know about the change. No biggie if I forget a few, they will just call DH or our home number -and get me!

I use my cellphone for all my calls but still have a landline for emergencies. I pay $14.00 for a basic landline with no frills. The only reason I have it is to call 911 if there is every an emergency. And I was considering getting rid of the landline last year until I realized the importance of 911.

In my area, 911 can not track the location of a cell phone but they can track calls from a landline. My boyfriend was home alone at his house last year and woke up choking. He couldn't breath or talk but he managed to pick up the phone and call 911. He was unable to say anything to the operator but she sent out an ambulance right away. The paramedics were at his house within 5 minutes and saved his life. That wouldn't have happened if he had called from his cell phone. So that is the reason why I decided to keep my landline. I actually budget the cost under insurance because that is what I consider the reason for the phone.

That's a BIG PRO for me! I love that by only having a cell phone, I can control who can find my number, and who I can give it to. No more telemarketers! No more polls! It's great!

....and while I don't live in a hurricane zone, my land line used to go out a heck of a lot more when we had bad thunder/wind/ice storms that my cell phone does now.

For us, having only cell phones has been nothing but postive. :thumbsup2

Since the advent of the Do Not Call Registry, I've been telemarketer-free, so that's not an issue for me. I'm more concerned about people who legitimately need to contact me being able to do so.
