A sad state of affairs for someone who was one of the real pioneers of cookery shows on tv, took it away from it's rather straitlaced structure to a real, off the cuff approach that has been taken on by Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver, etc, etc.
I read a fascinating interview a while back whereby he lamented not being able to seperate himself from the public perception of him, and that he found himself feeling like he needed to live up to the publics expectations, something which was fairly apparent over the last couple of years, with his various 'shenanigans'. A fiery character indeed, but a personality that people found interesting in this time of media produced 'reality' personalities.
I loved his cooking series and watched them religiously, the tours round Italy, Spain and America stand out in my mind.
An extremely talented, passionate and totally entertaining individual, and a sad loss.
