Celebrating 2nd B-day at Disney

We just booked our first family trip to Disney World in May. The last time I was there was eight years ago for our honeymoon. I have been to Disney World many times over the years. However, this will be the first time that anyone in my family will be there during their actual birthday.

My son will turn 2 during our stay. I already have an alert on our room that he will be celebrating a birthday. Since he is under two, he does not count in the new birthday promotion that they are running. Just curious from others, what are suggestions on things to do for the little guy. I know a lot will go over his head, but his big brother, hubby and I will enjoy watching. I believe a friend told us to go to guest relations at the Magic Kingdom to get a birthday button for many surprises. We will definitely do that.

Any other thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I would definitely order a cake for him! You can call the main WDW cake hotline (phone number and pictures of lots of example cakes are in a thread over on the dining board http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1859670), and you'll be directed to the right place. You can order a cake for one of your planned meals, or to be delivered to your resort room (I'm not sure if all of the resorts do this, though). I've only ever had a cake delivered to my room at the Grand Floridian, and the ordering process was extremely easy and everything went off really smoothly! I know some of the restaurants (like Crystal Palace and Chef Mickey's) will decorate your table or give the birthday boy a card if you have the cake delivered there, though, so that might be the more fun option! I believe they'll also do special decorations or cards if you note the birthday celebration when making your ADRs, too, so be sure to mention his birthday.

Thanks for the information. I will talk to my husband about ordering a cake. Since JSL is so little and we will likely have a family party with cake when we get home, I am not too sure the cost of the Disney cake is worth it for us. I believe I have read that they will give kids a cupcake or something at places on their birthday. That to a two year old would be priceless as well.

Right now we are in the process of switching our reservations to a different resort. Once that is done we can start to think about where to eat on his special day, but Crystal Palace and Chef Mickey are on the short list.

You can get the birthday pin at a Disney resort too. Definitely have him wear it (or even pin it to his diaper bag if he won't wear it). You may or may not get little special items, but you'll very likely get lots of Happy Birthdays if it is in a place the CMs can see it.

We did not get any special gifts from the resort, but I had bought a few trinkets and signed a card from Mickey for my daughter and left it for her myself. Who would have guessed the cheap beach ball from Mickey would be such a hit!

Our daughter did receive a few little special gifts, but our big thing was that the morning of her actual birthday she got to dictate what we did (within reason). So we spent that morning in Toontown Fair.

The cake thread on the restaurant board has lots of ideas, we got the mini castle cake and it was yummy, but I think I'd just do the basic (order at the counter) cake next time. I found myself stuffing the cake in as my daughter wasn't hungry and I knew how much I had paid for that cake--it was going to get eaten by someone! :lmao:

If you happen to go to Epcot that day, the kid cot CMs will wirte Happy Birthday in their language for you. Our 5 year old loved that, not sure a 2 year old would care though.

Thanks for the great tips. I will definitely try to remember a card to him from Mickey Mouse. Even at two I think he will love it. We will likely spend at least part of the day at the MK, but have not figured out where we will have dinner that night.

Now my biggest fear is that my 5 year old will expect us to spend his birthday at Disney World in August. That will not be happening, but we are sure he will ask once we get back home.
