Cedar Point Unveils 'Maverick'
Coaster Reaches Top Speed Of 70 MPH
CLEVELAND -- A new ride will be unveiled at Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio, in the spring, WEWS-TV in Cleveland reported.
Officials made the announcement on the amusement park's Web site at about 3:30 a.m. They said, "The Old West was never this wild."
The new ride is called the Maverick, and the ride will take guests to a new frontier in 2007, according to the amusement park's news release.
The ride is located in Frontiertown, and guests will begin the ride by boarding steam-era-styled coaster trains.
The train will reach 105 feet on the first hill, and then take its passengers to a 95-degree angle at speeds of up to 57 mph to within 5 feet above the ground. It also has a tunnel where it reaches a top speed of about 70 mph.
"This ride is going to have a lot of twists and turns, air time, low to the ground," said Monty Jasper of Cedar Point. "You see once you ride it it has a lot of speed yet doesn't achieve that by going very very high."
The station reported that Cedar Point pulled together $21 million to build the ride. The ride lasts about 2.5 minutes.
The early phase of Maverick's construction began last year when the park took out the White Water Landing flume ride.
The new ride has been in the works for about three years.
