CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

It is possible that they'd already been exposed and didn't know it. It is very likely that a lot of asymptomatic and mild cases did go undiagnosed, especially early on and among those less likely to seek testing. My son has had several direct exposures at work, including one person he carpools with (unmasked) and never tested positive himself... but our family got sick with covid-type symptoms after traveling early in the pandemic, so I ascribe his experience not to luck but to that possible previous exposure. Actually, my husband and both adult kids have had close-contact exposures that required testing and none got sick, nor did they bring the virus home to DD12 or I (that we're aware of, anyway).

Definitely possible...

I believe it needs to be given very soon after diagnosis, it is not effective if someone is already hospitalized. It’s an IV infusion over several hours. Its only authorized for certain high risk conditions (less than what the CDC defines high risk as far as vaccination eligibility) or for people over 65.

It’s also not yet authorized to be used in already hospitalized patients.

So either the percentage of people still naive to the virus is higher than estimates would predict or there's more reinfection potential because of the spread of virus variants (the UK being the only one confirmed in our county so far, though the state has cases of the SA and Brazilian variants as well).

MI and FL are both the leading states with highest number of document B117 cases and number of new cases daily overall.
Just a correlation, and not suggesting anything yet.

Huge news for California. The Governor just announced that vaccine will be available April 1 for everyone 50+ and April 15 for everyone 16+.

Pretty shocked, to be honest. But great news nonetheless.
Wow, I hope this is true, have been sitting by anxiously awaiting eligibility to open up for what seems like forever. Can you make an appointment now or in a few days for a shot scheduled for after April 1? Not sure how it works and want to try to get a jump on this if possible, it's going to be rough trying to compete with everyone.

No. You will have to wait until the date you are eligible to make the appointment. You can probably pre register for whatever your county provides, but I'd just recommend going through the pharmacies. They get a huge number of vaccines from the fed govt every week and it's pretty easy to get an appointment most places.

Scientists aren't necessarily smarter than everyone. They have more expertise in their field than others do but let's not forget not all scientists agree on everything. Also, not every study is as valid as another one or that the results some interpret are really significant or not. It is a lot more nuanced than people think and influenced by a lot of things.

We all should be able to listen to what the "experts"say and make a determination from there of how we are going to proceed. We don't listen to experts on most things and we have all mostly survived.

In my social circle, we have reached a point, where if you haven’t had a vaccine, you’ll be excluded. No one wants to associate with someone that can increase their risk of getting it. No one with 70+ parents wants to take that risk.

It’s become a social thing regardless of the science, which we expect to change over time.

This is how it is in my circle as well. Maybe it's a Gen x thing?

Most likely you will have to wait until April 1 if you don’t fall into any existing priority groups during sign-up right now.

In mine the most resistance has been from the 50-60 year olds between my family, my husband's family, extended family, friends of family, etc. For the most part the younger ones (with a few exceptions) are like "gimmie that vaccine pronto". One of them that is resistant is my father-in-law's wife. Excluding socially is not really on the table. Though we did hear that one of her children, the daughter, ended up getting a vaccine despite initially following her mom's "word is law" talk that they will refuse to get it. That daughter is nearly 30. I'm happy to hear she got it though.
No idea. But it’s the peer pressure way to get compliance from friends. The vac card is something you can show off.
I think this can def. be the case. I wouldn't go off showing your card really to friends (but I can see posting on FB or other social media you got vaccinated) but it's a bit like "I voted" stickers. Locally places are starting to offer discounts or deals for those who have been vaccinated but at least considering the fair part (because of vaccine not being able to actually be given to everyone with everyone being able to have that option) the deals I've seen have been virtually all for "through the end of 2021". Nationally Krispy Kreme is one that will give you a free donut every day if you show your vaccination card through 2021.

Here too. My kids' generation seems to be all over it as soon as they're eligible, at least in their social circles. My circle of older Millennial/younger Gen Xers is as well. The most reluctance I've seen has been in the 50-something men in my extended circle, particularly DH's work friends, though MIL says she hasn't decided yet whether she's going to get it. I suspect that in the end, peer pressure from her 80-something sister and her 40-something son will sway her; they were both chomping at the bit to be vaccinated and are more than a little horrified that she's dragging her feet.

The expertise in their field is my exact point. If I have a mechanic with 20 years experience trying to fix my car I really don't need to hear a 10 year old who read a car magazine criticizing them for trying to figure out the issue.

This really depends on place to place not just county, city, state but also who is the vaccine administrator.

Most places do say "don't sign up unless you're eligible" so for you that would be April 1st. That said if you haven't already look at what the places in your area offer. Multiple places in my area had 'vaccine alert' signups through e-mail or text.

Speaking just towards my area right when eligibility opened up for Phase 3 and 4 on 3/22 just because I was eligible didn't mean places were taking my phase. There was an issue with Walmart in my area where they weren't updating their webpage to reflect the new phase. Literally their answer to it not being updated was people "can call their local pharmacy about the Waste Protocol option, where doses of remaining vaccines of the day are administered to individuals who may need one." There's 1 location in my county that is doing vaccines and they have since updated their website to reflect the new phases but it was a few days later. CVS was also one that said: "could take an additional 72 hours for an update."

In my circle, there is only 1 person that I know of that is reluctant to get it. He’s in his 50s and big into various conspiracies that he posts about on FB. Most of our friends have gotten it or have appointments. It’s so nice to be able to make plans again with everyone :)

In my state and inner circles it is most definitely the 50-60 year olds that are resisting, and it shows in the vaccination rates that are published on our state's website.

In our county a surprising number of those over 65 did not immediately get it when they could (almost 40%).

Our senior community is made up of neighborhoods that have lots of neighborhood wide social activities. In my neighborhood, those activities have been started up again on the sly, inviting only those who are fully vaccinated. Doesn’t look like we are the only ones doing that. In the last week the number of seniors vaccinated for the first time jumped 10%. Yup, getting left out of activities may be an incentive.

We don't ask if someone has been vaccinated or not. We know the children haven't taken the jab and they aren't excluded.
We don't ask either, most of the time you're not talking about your medical stuff to other people. But peeps not wanting to get it when they are eligible to get it in our social circle and extended family have made that information known either in person or on social media so I kinda have to believe them and I know their age group. In general on the street no you're probably not going to know it. Most of my age group are saying they have gotten vaccinated via FB. Even my best friend I wouldn't ask her if she got vaccinated but she shared that immediately when she got it. Most of the people in my age group are all too happy to share their excitement in getting vaccinated.

Right now the main metric is looking at percentage of a particular age group per their population has gotten it when an area or state lists that on their dashboards.
