Hello! We're just back from our first four night cruise!! Here are some things I learned and thought were good to know from my first time to snorkel in years. We had a great time!!! :Pinkbounc

Be aware that the snorkel mask may leave black rings on your face so you may want some wet wipes.
Put on your fins while you are in the water and then walk backwards until you can turn around and swim.
Go way out by the buoys and don't be afraid!
Children who do not have snorkel equipment or are too young to have snorkel equipment must wear a life vest, which is complimentary from the same place where you get the snorkel equipment
A t-shirt over your bathing suit is a great idea to help from getting sunburned

Anybody have any more?

Thanks for the observations and tips!

We did a 4-night in Sept of '03, and that was one of the highlights of the trip - snorkeling at Castaway Cay! :cheer2: We had a great time! At one time I was not even keen on swimming in the ocean! Let alone going that far out from shore! It was quite a liberating experience! I felt almost one with nature, like I was one of the fish! :lovestruc ( I know, it sounds corny! :p But that's the way it felt!)

We can't wait to do it again on our Eastern in September! In fact, we'll probably end up doing a Trunk Bay snorkeling adventure, which is something I would have never done had I not "gotten my feet wet" at Castaway Cay! I can't wait!!! :Pinkbounc

Again, thanks for the tips! (I'll have to use the t-shirt one...I got burned last time!) Hope the rest of your cruise was just as "Wonder"-ful!!!

Don't forget a under-water camera. Get one with a wrist strap. They have disposable ones.

CC is great with lots of sandbars to stand up on if you get tired of floating/swimming. The trick here is to roll onto your back and then stand up - otherwise you'll trip over your fins.

Keep an eye open for Barry!!! He's very real and very big - as I've posted elsewhere our highlight was a surprise face-to-face encounter with him.

Do they have boats to take you out further to snorkel? We did a snorkeling excursion one day while in Ft Lauderdale, and the boat took us way out. Leaving 5/15/05 on the WONDER

I haven't been on my cruise yet, but I read that on the seahorse snorkeling excursion at Castaway Cay you ride a 65 foot catamaran out to snorkle. I am really thinking of doing this.

Do you have to have flippers to snorkel? My kids have a mask and a breathing tube, but no flippers.

Thanks, that helps us out a lot, I am Impressed by all the info you can get on this site!! Just afew more days and we are off on our 4-day Wonder, can't wait!!

ooh - one quick tip...

Guys, be sure and shave before you go snorkeling. DH and I went to the keys a year or two ago, and he decided to grow a bit of a beard on vacation. While I didn't love it, I didn't care. We have our own snorkel gear, so we were really surprised when we got it in the water and his kept leaking.

It turns out, his new mustache was keeping his mask from making a good seal. I think I have heard that vaseline will help that....not sure.

Anyway, it's something you want to figure out before you get in the water with your snorkel mask...

Have a great time!!

Fins are not mandatory. We brought our own snorkeling equipt, and picked up the free vests. If you go earlier in the day,the water wuill not be as cloudy as it was for our 12:30 romp..
