Caution: A Warning About Roast Beef

I put down some long-stem flower stems one time. DH said the garbage disposal was not for "yard waste."

I went to dinner at a friend's house one night and we had the roast beef catastrophe while we were doing dishes. The yucky, beefy, fatty water backed up and spewed from the pipes all over the kitchen. It was not a fun time.

Potato peelings do that too!

Awww. You beat me to the punch on this one. I can still see half ground up potato peelings bubbling up from the laundry tub in our basement. Boy was THAT ever a mess to clean up.

Guilty with the potato peels as well. It had to happen to me one Thanksgiving a few years back. DH had to cut a hole in the pipe in the basement and clean out the drain. Nothing else worked. I did not know that about spaghetti, I have not had a problem with that.

I don't have a disposal, but it seems like they are good for nothing - everything clogs them? What are they for, then?

this is why i don't use mine! not to mention, i think the idea is sort of gross. i just use the trash can.

I am convinced that the garbage disposal is there to simply grind up the food that you can't manage to scrape into the garbage can BEFORE you wash the dishes. And after 20 years of marriage, I still haven't convinced my wife of that "fact". At least we don't do potato peels anymore.

WAY back in the day when a garbage disposal was still a luxury and not just an everyday household appliance, my MOTHER bought one because it was something fun or something like that, anywho.... she tried to put CHICKEN BONES down one! :earseek: SHE thought that it would grind them up and they would go down, locked that sucker up TIGHT! :smooth:

My father had a FEW choice words to say about THAT one! :rolleyes1

That's so wild because I always put potato peelings down mine and never had a problem. I think the speghetti was so long and thin, it just slithered past the blades and clogged up my sink.

Onion skins kill mine. I have not had trouble with potato peels in moderation, but I did clog my in-law's with them one Thanksgiving. Nothing like doing dishes in the bathtub on Thanksgiving night to remind you to be cautious.

I was told never to put meat products in mine at all.
