Caught off guard at peds this am....Brittany has a heart murmur.

Took three of the kids to pediatrician today for their well check. Totally caught off guard when the doc found a heart murmur on Brittany. She was scrutinized both before and after she was born since her two older siblings both had heart defects and no defect or murmur was found then OR at any of her subsequent well child visits.

The doc said the murmur is NOT in the place an innocent murmur is found. So, now Brittany has to have a chest x-ray, labs, and a consult with a cardiologist. And of couse, mom is freaking out wondering if this is new or if it is something that could have possibly been missed all this time (but, I'm not sure how!) *sigh*

Anyone else have a child diagnosed with a heart murmur late in life??

My dd was diagnosed with this at her 2 year checkup. We just had her 3 year appts with the cardiologist yesterday. It looks like everything is fine, and she should grow out of it. The one thing my pedi told me was that sometimes they are hard to detect when they are little, and they don't really become audible until after they are 2. Hope this helps a little. Let us know what the cardiologist says!!

She's 10. That's why it really surprised me. I don't know if it's something new or what? I am sure it isn't anything to worry about, but I've been through the open heart suregery junk with Garrett, so heart stuff kind of freaks me out!

Bradley Scott had a murmur detected when he was 4 days old, which turned out to be a VSD and Destiny had one discovered when she was 2 months old, which was an ASD. Both of those resolved before they were two. Garrett's was more severe and he had surgery.

I was diagnosed at 12 and found to have mitral valve prolapse. I get an echo every year and I've had episodes of tachycardia. Last echo showed slight thickening which worries me...I get another echo in July. Wishing your dd the best!

i know you must be scared It does happen sometimes, that a heart murmur is not identified until a child reaches their teens. Glad you found it before then. We'll cross our fingers for ya'll that this is easily treatable and not a huge big deal.

ETA: none of my kids has a murmur, but DH developed one in his late 40's due to mitral valve prolapse. He just has to take antibiotics propr to dental work and have cardio checkups periodically. His situation is a little more complicated(he has a pacemaker) but my point is, it's been imminently manageable with meds.
