Why are cats so entertained by laser pointers?

What are your favorite ways to play with your animals?

My indoor cat gets frustrated by the laser pointers. She plays with it at first but when she can't "catch it" she walks away. :(

I have sort of a "fishing pole" type thing with feathers attached to the end and she loves playing with that. She'll chase that thing forever.

DH plays ball with his dog outside, throw the ball she runs and gets it and brings it back. She's getting old though (14 in March) so he only throws it for her a few times as she gets out of breath easier now but will still keep chasing, so he has to tell her when it's enough. :)

My cat is to good for playing. :snooty: Such a snob. We do catch her batting balls or bottle caps around. I do like watching her "play" with my friends puppy. :rotfl2: The puppy has a kitty at home that will play with him. Miss Priss just whacks him around. Silly puppy goes back for more and my cat yells at me.:rolleyes2

My grandparents cat used to LOVE the laser pointer. It was so funny watching her race down the hall after the red dot and pounce at it.

My cat isn't. He realizes where it's coming from and can't be bothered.

Dogs on the other hand? My lab used to run into the wall chasing that thing!

My cat has one of these. She LOVES it. She carries it around with her and sleeps with it...I'm like...?? Why are you sleeping with a pole and a string with a feather on the end? You have stuffed animals and mice? :confused3

Our older cat, Monster (12) doesn't care for the laser. Once or twice, she's gone after it, but it only lasts about 30 seconds. Actually...her favorite toys are boxes and tissue paper.

Now, the younger one, Dio (5), he goes INSANE over the laser! His eyes get huge and he crouches in wait before he attacks it. We can keep him busy for a good 3-4 hours each night with it.

We originally bought a hand-held laser, but he likes it so much, it was getting tiring. So for Christmas, I bought one of these:

Tires him out and we all get a good night's sleep!

My kitty LOVES the laser pointer....I always have to make sure that it doesn't run out of batteries or he get cranky. :P

Our kitty loves the lazer and it keeps him busy, but he would love that tube even better. Right now we have paper bags out that he loves to go in and watch everyone and then pounce.

Blue the cat used to love the laser pointer. After about two weeks, she looked at the light, looked at my husband, and then just sat down. She figured it out and now can't be bothered at all.

Her favorite toy after that was my bathrobe tie. I have no idea why. It is red and very fluffy and she would chase that thing all over and roll herself up in it. Then that go put aside.

We then got a stick with feathers on it, in blue. This was okay but not her favorite.

I bought her a new toy recently. A stick with a stuffed squishy bit covered in plush animal print with long feathers at the end. THIS is the way favorite now. She will chase it and growl at it and when she catches it, she'll carry it in her mouth (with the stick following) to another room where she hides it.

Now that's a great idea..thanks for the link..just ordered one..with 5 cats who love to play with a laser pointer, my hand gets tired holding it so they can all have turns..no more..lol!

Our cat likes to play on the stairs. She has a little furry ball about the size of a ping pong ball and it will bounce on the stairs if you throw it hard enough. This sends our cat chasing after it clinging onto the stairs, positioning upside down, etc. The toy came from Disney in a little bag of cat toys with character faces on it. :)

My dog like...no scratch that, she loves to swim. I can't even say the word swim in the summertime unless I want her getting all excited. I think her most favorite thing is to belly flop off the dock before swimming out to get her toy. She also loves when my Dad and her sister come pick her up and go cross country skiing.

Phil that's so cool. What breed is your dog?:)

My cat, Isis, loves to play with string and this feather in a stick thingy. I have taken some videos.

Oh my, that second video, when she's running in circles. I love doing that.

Sometimes when I get lazy holding the feather-stick I stick it in the couch cushion. Mine's amusing himself with it now.

Lol. She goes crazy for that feather stick thing.

Flashlights also work with cats sometimes. My family's cat Shadow loves the flashlight. I think he realizes where it comes from but doesn't care, he still loves to chase it around...he's also 16 or 17 years old and slowed down only slightly over the years.
