Cathing?

Sue & Snowbird - You have just been a wealth of information! I just got finished reading your replies to my husband. I'll definitely check out the coloplast website, those are the catheters we use anyway, so maybe they will work...

I can't thank you enough for sharing these great tips/experiences with me. We leave for Disney in a few weeks and are so ready to celebrate:)

Thank you!

Rachel

Call Coloplast, they will send you free samples.

Have a great trip!

We should have gotten there on Sunday for the winter but my youngest got a blood clot in her leg and was in the hospital Thurs - Sunday and now I have to give her blood thinner shots 2 times a day. If her blood levels are ok we leave on Saturday and will be there Sunday. We have used Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital in the past when needed but the new Nemours Children's Hospital opened Monday and we already have an appointment.

he got his from coloplast. He uses the catheter insertion kit ref # 76100. These do not have a catheter in them just the supplies to cath and bag. He uses the catheter that comes by itself that is coude tip. This packet has made traveling so much easier for him. If you have any other questions I would be happy to help.

:thumbsup2

Thanks for the kit number. I forgot to add that you can get full cath kits and bag kits.

Michigan mentioned calling Coloplast for samples. There is a link on their website to contact them for free samples.

Michigan - sorry about your DD. Hope she is well enough to travel on Saturday (and the weather cooperates - tropical storm in the area).
Check your PM box for a message from me.

Yes, she did. Are you familiar with that? Hardly anyone is! She's not able to do it herself yet, so I'll need to be with her.

Thank you so much Sue for your information, it's very appreciated!

In that case you worry way too much, IMHO.

In even the most yukky bathrooms you can cath with a mitrofanoff without any risk of any transfer of stuff. One uses a wipe and a sterilised cath and can cath on a garbage pile without risk. Don't even need to wash your hands if need be. Simply don't touch anything other than the mitrofanof with the sterilized cath tip and don't pull down the protecting package before entering the cath but as it is entering thus avoiding touching any off the sterile part.

If not competent enough to do that -and very easily learned- that is where the wipe comes in to clean the belly a bit in case of risk touching the surrounding area of the mitrofanoff at a moment with the cath at an area that enters the mitrofanoff.

One of the big things with a mitrofanoff is the freedom it comes with. You can literally cath anywhere and anytime without any real risk and without anyone knowing what you are doing when having a bit of practice with it. To give you an idea; I ended up cathing in my BC seat on my flight back home yesterday, because I'm not stable enough to use an aisle chair, get into the bathroom and cath there, seeing I'm recovering from a stroke I had on that trip. The person sitting next to me was chatting along with me all the while I was doing this. She did notice me unbutting my jeans (have high rise jeans) but didn't gave it a second though. She had NO clue what I was doing, nor did the other flyers around me, joining us in the conversation standing beside and above me with a very high interest in me because of the subject of discussion. FA's didn't even have an idea, eventhough I called for them, had them around and had them get my mom in from economy to help me out and they KNEW one of the jobs she was helping me out with was emptying the cath bags for me. Same thing while in ICU for the stroke and having half a dozen docs and nurses around me and again knowing I cath and at that time checking me for multiple vitals every 5 minutes.

I've done it at concerts, yes on Mainstreet USA waiting for a parade, you name it. No clue for those around, soooooooo easy and convenient for me to do it where ever I am without having to move if don't feel like it or not possible.

Biggest hurdle will be learning to go with that freedom. Find out which materials work best for this body and their personal likings -also a big factor!-. The latter can take quite a lot of time when that best fit is not the 1st or 3rd type you try. But keep in mind that keep trying is very much worth it when you do find that perfect fit.

I had a medical need, there was no discussion possible. It was either mitrofanoff of an incontinent uronostomy. I know what it is like to pee as Mother Nature intended. Had no clue I had any medical problems until being a teenager, had no uro-problems until about a year or 5 before going for the mitrofanoff (got mine in 2008), didn't use a wheelchair until almost 13 years ago. I kinda know the different states going from "standard Mother Natures intended way" to just making transfer to cathing through the urethra while using a chair etc. etc. Can't say anything else than that I truely feel having the mitrofanoff is by far the most relaxed, easiest way of peeing. Never needing to worry about access or looking for a bathroom but being able to pee 24/7 and literally everywhere need be. Very quick, easy and smallest risk of infections of them all for me.

Enjoy the freedom you will find! :)

Thanks for the info goofieslonglostsis....I'm not really worried about, I just like to be prepared.

I am not sure what a mitranoff is but as a bladder cancer survivor I know quite a few women who have had their bladders removed. If they have an internal pouch (indiana pouch) rather than an external bag, they pretty much cath anywhere. There is a youtube video of a lady draining her pouch that is very good.

All of the cath companies will send free samples, or so I am told. You have to find the type that works best for you. If your daughter is not in a chair she should eventually be able to use the conventional stall. A friend of mine loves saying that she confuses the heck out of people because she is the one standing at the toilet with her feet going the wrong way for the ladies room!

The only problem with first aid is that depending on the frequency you cath, it could be a long hike to get there. But if you are new to cathing it might make you feel easier about it if you were in a cleaner environment than a restroom.

My daughter has a continent vesicostomy and we cath through that. We also use the all-in-one caths. We get them in Coude tip since the way her vesicostomy is constructed we need that little tip to get it past the valve they constructed. She has cathed about everywhere and we have found sometimes just getting to an out of the way spot to do so is cleaner then trying to get two of s in a stall in a not always clean bathroom. Again that is us and the all in one system makes it pretty easy. We know a few people who use a bottle with a screw on lid (water or soda) and keep a couple of those for tomes you need to cath and there is either no bathroom or a dirty bathroom. This way the can cath and put the lid on then dispose of it. I will say it gets easier and we love her vesicostomy for the ease of catching.

So you all are telling me that the constant UTIs I get are probably false positives due to my Mitrofanoff? Why did my doctors not tell me this?

If they used a dipstick to test, then yes odds are high for false positives. Only cultures are reliable and even then my urologist hard different ranges than for those without mitrofanoff.

Why they didnt tell? Most arent knowledgable enough to know this.

Having said that, infections always are a risk thus also something to always take up with a mitrofanoff knowledgable enough doc and never assume one way or another.

Yes, your mitrofanoff used some part of your bowel for the augmentation and will always test positive for e-coli. If you aren't symptomatic, i.e. fever and pain you don't have an infection. Even with a culture it will come back positive but your doctor should have done a baseline test right after you go your mitrofanoff

That is true also for anyone with an in dwelling urinary catheter.
