I finally was able to convince my DH that we HAD to have a Verandah;) for our cruise in October. We got a Cat. 6 GTY. Should I be nervous that we can't pick our room? How do they work this? Are we more likely to get a higher category since we are a family of 4, and I read in the Passporter that there are only 14 Cat.6 that hold 4 people?

Thanks!

The GTY means you are guaranteed to get at least a category 6 (full veranda stateroom) that sleeps ALL the members of your party. You may even get upgrated to a higher category.

Regardless, you will get a cabin of at least category 6 or better. Many choose to go this way (and not get a assigned room number ahead of time) because of the upgrade potential. You should find out your assigned room when your docs arrive, but it could be as late as when you sail.

I read one post where a person in your (an my situation - I'm a cat 6 GTY too) that was upgraded to Cat 3 on sail date, because DCL has an easier time selling the cheaper cabins closer to sail date. I'm encouraged, and maybe we'll even get a cat 1 (keep your fingers crossed).

Thanks for the reply! It just makes me nervous not being able to pick which cabin I want. I had to work on my DH for a couple of months and when I finally get him to agree there aren't any cabins left to pick from! I am VERY excited that I will be getting my verandah though!:D

You can check availability (to a limited extent for your cruise). I used Expedia.com and Travelocity.com to check availability for my cruise date (although I'm booked through DCL). For my date, here is what was available yesterday for the June 7th Western:

Cat 12: 2515
Cat 11: 6633, 6611, 6539, 6537, 6323, 7539, 7535
Cat 10: 1079, 1049, 1047, 1045, 2603, 2153,2147
Cat 9: 1038, 1036, 2600, 2592, 2546, 2044, 2042
Cat 8: GTY
Cat 7: 5636, 5634, 5632, 5136, 5134, 5132, 6138
Cat 6: 5642, 5142, 6650, 6150, 6148, 6146, 6144
Cat 5: 7614, 7570, 7130, 7118, 7116, 7114, 7112
Cat 4: 8580, 8562, 8550, 8514, 8094, 8054, 8010

Note the many Cat 6's still available. Some of these Cat 6's are in the aft with very large veranda's (nice) and quiet.

I know that this list is not all inclusive, as travel agencies get blocks of rooms to try and sell (read Expedia/Travelocity cannot show all available rooms, only DCL can) so I know there are more available than on this list. I have a friend who's wife is a travel agent, and I'm planning to ask what she can find out with her connections. I too am curious, and if there are Cat 6's on sail date, well that's probably what we'll get. I'm still hoping for that upgrade though!

Thanks everyone! I have checked all of the sites for my date, and they are all coming up with a GTY status.

laurenk Try once again, but checking for 3 persons in a room. This should show you the available rooms that will not sleep your party. The reason I ask is that if the Cat 6's are full, the potential to be upgraded higher exists.

GenieDana- I am SO confused! How will Category 6's that only sleep 3 make any difference if we are a party of 4? I am off to check now...........:D

if u check the ones that only sleep 3 u can elimanite those cat 6 rooms from ones avaliable .... narrowing the field of cat 6 to see if there r rooms avaliable in cat 6 or u will get upgrade to another catagory... if u only find cat 6 roooms that sleep 3 then i would say u would be upgraded to anoher cat ... get it....
peter

Peter- I might be really dense here... but why would I care about rooms that sleep 3 if I need one that fits 4? There are rooms available for 3 in Category 6, but if I can only book a Category 6 GTY, doesn't that mean that the rooms that fit 4 are taken up? I do realize that people could cancel and I would get a cat. 6.

Sorry I am not understanding:D

if u cannot get a room that sleeps 4 in that cat.. that is a good thing .... if u can only get rooms that sleep 3 .... and u need a room that sleeps 4 .... that is a good thing ..... possible upgrade
i see what u r sayying .....
peter if there was a room in cat 6 they would just give it to u...

A smarter and wiser DIS Vet Horace Horsecollar posted elsewhere that the search engines used by Expedia, Travelocity, Cruise -locator and even Dreams Unlimited (who hosts this board) will show you only up to seven available rooms in your desired category for a given number in your party.

You can still use this to an advantage however - If they don't list any rooms in your desired category accomodating the number in your party you could presume there might not be any left.

I would not know how to interpret if it reports GTY???

You can have a state room # on your doc's and still get an upgrade! read it in a trip report from March on the passporter site
2 cat. 6's to 1 room suites!!!
let that kind of pixi dust fall on me!!
