A few weeks ago, I started a thread about my neighbor harassing me about cat odors escaping from my apartment. I thought I'd give an update.

I didn't contact the management company immediately (my mistake). I was cleaning and decluttering and I thought I was controlling the problem. But two weekends later, my neighbor hit a low point. He was ringing my doorbell and leaving Bounce sheets on my door knobs. The signs he was leaving on my door were getting larger and more obnoxious, and at one point I was nervous about leaving my apartment. I considered calling the police, but didn't think I had too much ground unless Mr. Wonderful assaulted me.

One day after work, I arrived home to find a notice under my door from the Board of Health (yes, really). The complaint read that there was a vile odor coming from my apartment that was permeating throughout the entire hallway. They wrote that they came, inspected and noted that there was a "slight" odor near my apartment, and asked that I maintain my apartment. No warning, no timetable. I'm sure they were expected the odor of feces and dead animals. I'm not sure how I can be expected to maintain all the odors on my floor, but I'll worry about that if Mr. Wonderful calls them again.

So ... I spoke to the Management Company who told me that Mr. Wonderful did complain to them about me, they did send someone up to "sniff" and they didn't smell anything, so they never told me. They told him as much, and he told them he was going to the Board of Health. They were not happy to hear that he did. They also asked me to save all of the signs he left on my door.

The building superintendent is coming over tomorrow morning to do a sniff test and put this thing to rest once and for all. I've been stressing over this for two weeks. I've been cleaning. I bought air filters that are specifically made to remove pet odors. I scrubbed the floors with chemicals used in kennels. And spraying with Nature's Miracle. But it's been over 90 degrees for the past week, and I live in a one bedroom apartment, so any odor will be amplified.

Words of encouragement will be greatly appreciated. I'll let you know what happens.

Good luck and can you pick up a window type air conditioner? I have seen them for much less than $100.

Nut Job
(him not you) Even if it was appaling he has no right to harass you -and I can't imagine that it is as much as you clean.

Good luck! :wizard: This guy sounds like a real jerk.

When everything is settled (as I'm sure it will be tomorrow) if Mr. Wonderful leaves ANYTHING at your door again, including a note, I would consider it harrassment and I would call the police if I were you. Even if they shrug their shoulders and leave, they will at least have talked to him and he will know you dislike his tactics. If he does it again, call the cops again, and do it each time he leaves something. Eventually he will get the message.

You have to be assertive with these type of people, otherwise they won't stop. Good luck!

Geez, what a jerk. Hope things work out for you. That person needs a different hobby.:sad2:

He sounds coo-coo for cocoa puffs!

I wonder if he has some type of sensory disorder where his sense of smell is super heightened?

I found out that there's a nifty thing called "intentional infliction of emotional distress." If it ever came down to it, that's how I'd word the court documents.

I've had these cats for over ten years in this apartment, so it's strange that Mr. Wonderful decided to complain now. I think that he's getting more bitter with age and probably doesn't like cats. Or, he might be smelling something, but it's not coming from my apartment. I have a covered litter box and I use cat litter and deodorizers. And, in any event, he should have complained to the Management Company and not harassed me personally.

I'm sure everything will work out, but I'm just nervous. If nothing else, this is an invasion of my privacy.

Oh my gosh, I just read this thread for the first time. I am so sorry you are going through this. This guy sounds like a real loser and a loose cannon.
Please document everything. I think you may be able to get a restraining order so he can't come near your door if it does this again.
Also, i'm sure they are, but I hope your cats are only indoor cats because I wouldn't trust this monster near your cats at all. He sounds like he has a whole long list of problems, and it sounds like managment would love a reason to get rid of him, so hopefully he leaves one more note so it can be the last straw and he can be gone. Keep us updated.
:grouphug:

That dude is a nut! I dont understand... I have two cats, i have two boxes and clean them daily. People that come over always say I cant believe you have indoor cats I dont smell anything. He is just yanking your chain and I would call the health department directly and ask them to come please explain and have another sniff. If you clean out the box everyday and use a good litter It should be fine, i promise lol.

PS my best friend also has two cats, her cat boxes are very close to her bedroom door and also cleaned daily I never smell hers either. Try not to stress to bad!

OH another thought, maybe he is on new meds that has got his nose smelling things that arent there????

I've wondered what happened since your last thread. This guy is a nut and I think you're right to be careful. Once he's not had satisfaction from either the management company or the Health Dept., who knows what avenue he'll take next? He obviously isn't ready to just give up. Good luck and keep us posted.

I agree, be careful. This guy sounds wacky.

Please post right away when you know the verdict. I just know you'll be fine.

How many cats do you have? I have 5 and 3 boxes. Most of the time they are pretty clean, but man if they go #2 it can sure smell the place up even if you dump it real soon. I find the stink spray works real well. Sounds like you don't have a real problem though. Sounds like your neighbor just needs something to complain about.

Does he hate cats or something? Even so, having a neighbor like that would drive me crazy.

I hope it works out for you. :wizard:

As the representative from the Management Company, the building super has come and gone!

He rang the buzzer, came in my foyer and gave me a strange look and said "What is going on?" I said I didn't know what the Management Co. told him, but it was my understanding that he was supposed to determine if there was an odor in my apartment. He said no and asked what had happened. I told him the story, showed him some of the signs. I even showed him the location of the litter box and he said there wasn't anything coming from there. I asked him if he did smell something to at least help me track it, but he didn't and he couldn't. He said he would report to the Management Co. that there was no odor in my apartment. For that matter, he didn't even smell anything in the building hallway.

Hooray for that! But I'm sure this isn't the end of it.

Good Job -even though you knew the guy was a flake -now you have proof!
Next time he does something -call the police!!!

If he continues with spraying stuff at your door, Id get a restraining order and talk to the management company about making him move!!!

I knew it wasnt you, as long as you keep them clean its all good!! Its when you let them go they get stinky and for him to smell it outside you would have to not clean for a few days and prob have the boxes right next to the door.

He maybe really mental and focusing on you!

Good for you!!!

Now about this guy, have you ever had any incidences with him in the past? It could be something small and something that wouldn't be a big deal to rational people. He sounds so bizarre and kind of like he has some kind of vendetta against you.

I mentioned this in your other thread, but smelling phantom odors can be a sign of a brain tumor. Somebody (not you) should suggest he have it checked out.
