Cat/Neighbor etiquette question...

You what really annoys me about the whole cat problem? Why should I have to spend money to keep someone else's pet out of my yard? If you own a pet then YOU own it and take care of it and be responsible. I do not want cats and that is why I don't have any. I don't want to clean up after anyone else's. I think people who let their cats run loose are irresponsible pet owners and completely rude. You might love your pet but I do not. I do not want to have to clean cat crap off my child's brand new sneakers because they were playing in their own backyard. I would like to have a vegetable garden with my kids but the cats think it is a litter box. That is gross and again- I DO NOT have cats. I should not have to clean up after someone else's pet.

I am sorry but this is a very sore subject for me as we have been dealing with this since we bought this house. Talking to the homeowners is pointless. I had pets all through growing up and they did not poop anywhere but in OUR yard and we cleaned it up. It's called being considerate for others.

I completly agree. My DH is a wildlife biologist and knows the damage that cats do to birds and other wildlife, and this another reason ours stay indoors where they belong.

I agree. I keep my dogs in my yard. When I walk them at times, I pick up after them. I spent alot of money to have my yard landscaped and now it is being ruined by the many cats that my neighbor keeps feeding. I am a pet lover and dont want anything to bad to happen to these cats but I dont want them in my yard either.

Many of those cats some of you see are likely feral. It's an accepted policy now to trap feral cats, neuter them and then set them free again. I know that you hate to hear that but quite a few shelters and animal groups seem to be doing that now.

I personally don't like any of the messes that animals make. Birds make an incredible mess on our patio and we've had squirrels bouncing around in our attic lately. The rabbits come in each evening and eat people's plants. It's hard to get rid of wildlife though and that includes feral cats.

Understand your dilemma. I have two sister kitties (now 9 years old) who were abandoned in a cardboard box on the side of a highway when they were 4 weeks old. After many sleepless nights and bottle feeding, they are now spayed and declawed and are indoor cats, healthy and contented. I also have a rescue abused female Cocker Spaniel also spayed, very healthy and loving, and only goes outside on a leash. I live in a semi-rural area, in a condo development, and also feed birds and other critters, which is allowed. What's not allowed is the idiot gun-happy guy and his idiot son (who thinks it's OK to shoot birds, squirrels, and a dog on a leash on private property where they don't even live! This is a no-hunting area. Thankfully, these jerks are both in jail for multiple violations. A very responsible dog-owner was walking his Doxie on a leash on our private property when it was shot and killed by this jerk. Very sad.

I am not thrilled witht eh feral cat problem, we got our four kitties from DH barn. People would drop their cats off because it was a nice farm and their unwanted cats would be happy. Yup......happily dead more likely! These animals are wild. We placed as many as possible, the owner's niece trapped as many as she could and had them neutered and gave them their shots. I am so sad for the ones I see hiding in the woods and bushes, cold and scared.

Nope, the cats in my yard are myt neighbors. Nothing deters them from letting these kitties out and they actually think the neighbors like them "visiting". We have coyotes in the area and they have lost several but just keep replacing them. My little female actually went through the screen door when their cat got too close, I have had to bleach my front porch because their male sprays, I am constanly on the lookout for feces in my gardens. They are nice in every other aspect but they really don't get the roaming cat problem that their animals present to those of us who keep our animals indoors.

My Dh was raised on a farm, their animals were all kept outdoors. That was then. While he did nto agree in principle that cats should be kept indoors he did understand that vet bills would be increased adn the cats life would never be what ours have experienced. He was as vigilant as i in keeping our kitties in teh house where they are safe.
