Okay I got a brother and sister pair in May 2006. The male is solid white and deaf.

The female had kittens five weeks ago (we do not think they are by the brother cat...not that it matters) and the male cat helped her take care of them up till last week. He bathed them, slept with them and was just a great help to her.

He came up missing for three days and came home with an injured eye (that is still swollen shut). When we let him in the house SHE attack him and I mean she tried to kill him.

We seperated them and figured he must have a smell on him so later that day I bathed him in some nice smelling shampoo and put him back outside. We then tried to bring him in and she again tried to attack him.

Last night DS had the male in his bedroom (in his lap) while the female was outside (it is getting harder to keep them seperated). We decided to let her back in and see what happened. She came in sniffing around DS chair and when she finally found him in DS lap she attack before we could do anything.

SHE IS VISCIOUS and seems to be out to kill him. He does not fight back. He is the gentlest thing and so sweet and he cannot hear her before she is on him.

We have to keep her in because of the four kittens but he is used to coming in and out at will.

My questions: Why would she be attacking him as they have lived together for over a year happily. She acts like she does not know this cat.
Also we are going to get rid of her and two of the kittens...How old do the kittens have to be before we can separate them from the mother? They are eating and even going in the litter box now.

Sometimes cats will attack other cats who are sick or injuried. I had a cat who was in liver failure and one of my other cats attacked him a couple of times. I'm not real sure what set her off, he had been sick for a while before she attacked him. She attacked him twice in the same weekend and then left him alone the rest of the time he was sick.

He wants to mate with her again and she is running him off.

No he is not making any advances toward her. Believe me we have seen him trying to mate with her and that is not what is happening.

He does not do anything to her and will not even fight back.

We did wonder if it had to do with him being injured. You would think she would try to help him instead of hurting him.

Anybody else out there was some input.

Kittens need to be at least 8 weeks old to be away from their mothers.

You need to have the male neutered immediately.

You need to have the female spayed as soon as the kittens are weaned.

And yes it does matter that you allowed a deaf male cat to breed his littermate.

The male is injured because you allowed an intact male cat roam the streets to fight with other cats over in-heat females.

The only thing you can do now is to keep them separated until the kittens are in their new homes. However, they may never be friends again.

Is the cat spayed and is he neutered? No...he is wanting to mate again.

We do not think that the kittens are his. She has a black kitten and three orange ones and there was an orange cat around at the time she got pregnant. So we do not think they are the deaf cats kittens.

Also if you would like to supply the money we will run out and get them neutered and spayed ASAP. (No I am not asking for money.) But this is not something we have extra money for and we did not take these cats by choice but to keep them from going to the pound.

Like I said we are getting rid of the female as soon as we can. We cannot afford to have her spayed and we do not want more kittens. I have a friend that wants her and will get her spayed (so I am not concerned with her). I am however, worried about my deaf male cat and why she is trying to kill him.

She is protecting her kittens. He is an unneutered male cat. He is a threat. Cats don't know they are siblings. It is natural.

Have him neutered right away. It is irresponsible to allow him to roam as an intact male, allowing him to get in cat fights and hurt.

Call the humane society - they have low cost spay and neuter clinics. Around here, where vet costs are relatively high for the area, you can still get a cat neutered for around $30.00.

If you can't afford the spay or neuter, how are you affording the kittens? Have they had their shots? You do realize, that since you chose to be a breeder, you have now chosen to be responsible for those kittens. It is up to you to make sure that those kittens have the proper shots and vet care before they go to their new homes. That vet bill is going to run you way more than a spay or neuter would have.

Not to be rude here, but you asked for help and that is what these people are giving you. Check around your area for a Humane Society or rescue group that can give you a less expensive amount for surgery. They are out there, please check into it asap.

As far as her trying to kill him, keep them seperate, period.
Until he is neutered or you find a new home for her, it is going to continue.

If you can't have them fixed, please keep them inside to keep them safe and keep her from having more kittens to "get rid of".

Will you have the funds for her medical care in the future when she gets sick?
Fixed pets tend to be healthier pets.

Pets can become expensive.

That's one reason I don't have any. To become attached to them and have to let them slip away because I couldn't do anything for them would break my heart.

Sorry I did not mean to sound ugly. I guess the money issue is a sore subject with me.

We do normally keep the cats in the house but he got out and came up missing for three days.

We cannot afford to have them fixed and yes I have checked all the vets and the humane society around here and in surrounding areas and no one offers a discount on getting them spayed. The cost for her is over 150.00 and for him is over 100.00. They have to have some sort of test before they will spay them.

Again I do appreciate the advice but telling me to get them fixed is just not an option.

Also like I said before he slept with her and the kittens and even bathed the kittens before he came up missing. So what is the differnce now. He was not neutered then either so why does she think he is a threat to them now.

We do plan to keep two kittens and keep them in the house at all times till we can afford to have them spayed.

But would it be better if I just took the whole lot of them to the pound? I hate to do that especially the deaf male cat. I feel sure no one would adopt him.

Right now we are keeping one of them in the garage and the other in the house but it is hard to keep up with who is in and who is out as I do have kids and they run in and out all day long.

Unspayed/neutered outdoor cats is my biggest pet peeve. If you can't afford to get them fixed them (I'm sorry but flame away) you need to take them to the pound because all you are doing is adding to the overpopulation of cats. I can't even begin to tell you the number of cats/kittens that are put down every day because people don't have their animals fixed. :sad2:

I'm with the other Posters in saying that the Tom is just trying to mate again (and just because the kittens don't look like the white cat doesn't mean they are not his)

I'm confused on why anyone would let a deaf cat roam? :confused3 That seems a little dangerous to me? I would never let a deaf cat outside.

I know I said he is used to coming and going at will but I did not mean that we let him roam. It is rare that he goes out that one of us is not with him. He really don't like to be outside.

So we do not let him roam the neighborhood we do try to keep an eye on him when he is outdoors and make sure he gets back in. I do have kids and one of them let him out and we did not realize it for a few hours.

We do keep up wtih our cats and try our best to protect our deaf cat.

My female cat getting pregnant was not a mistake. We wanted kittens and I had planned to find them good homes but now that this is going on I will probably be forced to take the ones we don't keep to the pound. BECAUSE we want to keep the deaf cat in the house and not in the garage.

We have found the female a home (one in which she will get spayed) but they do not want two kittens.

YES I plan to keep the two (possibly only 1) kittens (male) and the male deaf cat in the house at all times.

So please quit assuming that I let my cats roam the neighborhood inpregnating every female in site. That is not the case.

Male cats will kill male kittens - she is attacking to protect her male kittens. She may have accepted him before his absence, but now perceives him as a threat - which he might very well be as the kittens get older. I have had male cats kill kittens when I was a kid - as the kittens got older we had to start locking them in a safe place to protect them.

Thank you for this answer. I am just baffled about this. It all seems so weird but I will keep him away from the kittens.

Now how old do the kittens need to be before I can separate the mother from them? They are five weeks old today and I know that is too young even though they are eating and using the litter box.

I just don't know how much longer I can take the cat fight especially when he don't even fight back. We are trying to keep them seperated but it is becoming very hard. She will hunt him down and if he is in the house in a locked room she stands at the door and howls.

Here is a good source for help with spay/neutering.

http://www.lovethatcat.com/spayneuter.html

Also, call local rescue organizations to ask them if they can help with the cost as well as with finding homes for the cats you do not want to keep. It is absolutely necessary to have your animals spayed and neutered. There are plenty of homeless cats out there needing homes without breeding more.

There is no quick solution to this - you need to separate them. You are risking serious injuries to one or both if you do not. Put momma and her babies in your bedroom and keep the door closed. Or vice versa.

edited to add: The babies MUST be at least 10 weeks old to be properly socialized and ready to leave their mother and litter mates. Please do not try to separate them before this as it will lead to all kinds of behavioral problems.
