We've just arrived back from our first 4-day and loved it so much we're considering a 7-day next year.

The problem is, DCL are not showing any Cat 4 availability for our chosen cruise. We got a quote from DU who have offered Cat 4 GTY, which I understand means we would be assigned at least a Cat 4 stateroom.

Realistically, what are our chances of being upgraded to a Cat 3?
Has this happened to anyone? It would seem a little unfair, if there were upgrades to be had, to give it to us (relatively late bookers) rather than someone who booked early enough to be assigned a Cat 4.

Thanks

My TA practically promised me that we would get an upgrade from a CAT 4, and of course that didn't happen. I was a little disappointed but mostI think folks on this board will say that upgrades are few and far between. They happen, but not often.

I am sure you will get lots of responses on this...

As I understand them, FREE upgrades are a very rare thing. True, that when they do occur, they have happened to those who hold a Gty and not an assigned cabin. However it is also very true that FREE upgrades generally happen to those in Lower categories, say 10, 11, or 12 because they would llike to bring more guests into the lower priced cabins to fill the ship. Our advice will depend on the time of year you are sailing. If you are traveling in the Slow season (Hurricane season for Ex.) then ask for a PAID Upgrade at the port Consierge desk when you check in. The rates for the available upgrade have beeen more than reasonable. Or if you travel plans are for the Busy season. RELAX your Cat #4 cabin is Wonderful. You have a outside balcony view, a larger room and higher up on the ship. These things alone are worth celebrating. If the Freebie does come along Grab it, Most of us would but if it does not. ENJOY... you have worked a long time to enjoy your vacation, leave the stress at home and Have Fun

Sorry, Pryd! I wasn't specific enough in my first post. We had a Cat 4 on our 4-day and loved it. We want one for the 7-day we are planning but as it's Easter 2003, it seems that they are all gone. I was just curious as to how they handle GTY reservations for Cat 4. I've heard of many who were upgraded when they had Cat 9-11 GTY, but with Cat 4 the upgrade would have to put you into a suite!! I was wondering if this had ever happened.

We will be more than happy with a Cat 4 - we spent lots of time on the veranda, and on a 7-day we would have lots more time to do that!

Thanks for the replies.

While there is still a possibility that you'll get an upgrade, I think it's more likely that they will assign you a category 4 room when one opens up. There's bound to be cancellations between now and next Easter. When a cat. 4 opens, I'm sure they'll slide you in. There are fewer category 3 rooms on the ship, only 18, and there's likely a wait list for them for such a busy week. However, it still might happen, and wouldn't that be great!

I'd prepare for a cat. 4, that way you can only be pleasantly surprised.

As for a paid upgrade, the difference between a category 4 and catgory 3 is in the thousands of dollars.

I agree that the most likely outcome would be that you will be assigned into a Category 4 cabin.

For a variety of reasons, many people have to cancel or reschedule their cruises just before the final payment date for the cruise.

Especially during the busy Easter week, the cabins that are in Category 1 to 3 will be booked with waiting lists, so the chances of an upgrade to a cabin with a suite would be less than usual.

I also agree that you should go ahead and book the Category 4 GTY, since the worst outcome would be that you get the category 4.
