Since I was last on Castaway Cay in 2014, I see they have built some sort of security check for rebounding the ship. Does that mean I have to bring my shipboard card AND my passport ashore now? If I'd the choice, I'd much rather leave the passports in the stateroom safe.

Thoughts?

You don't need your passport, but you do need a photo ID. Driver's license is fine. You were always supposed to have your photo id before. It just wasn't strictly enforced.

Last time we cruised in March that security area seemed completed but no one was stationed there and it wasn't utilized. Assuming it's actually in use now?

I cruised in February 2015, and it was operational then.

What do you take for kids?

It's a bit annoying. For instance if I lost my D license, I can't rent a car after cruise, if I lose passport I can't get home. Probably the D license is the best option.

Don't lose them.

Just like all other ports, you don't need an additional photo ID for those under 16. All the new security check does is make Castaway Cay the same as other ports.

All adults (18 and over) need their Key to the World cards and a photo ID to leave and reboard the ship anywhere, including Castaway Cay. For children, you only need their KTTW cards.

We were there a few months ago and they were just randomly picking people for screening. We walked up with about 6 other families and 2 were picked. There wasn't a line at all. Not sure if everyone will eventually get screened, but seemed redundant since they screen you again when you board the ship. My thought was it is an extra revenue generator for the Bahamas.

It's a Bahamian government boondoggle. Adds nothing to security, increases hassle for vacationers. But it's there, and government programs never go away, so just consider it a necessary evil and live with it. Don't think for a moment they are protecting anyone from anything, except themselves from losing their jobs.

Real security comes when you board the ship. Depend on and trust that system.

We were just on the dream last week. They told us to bring our passports to the island. We only had to show our card two times we got back on the ship, even when we went to the security.

Like Dug720, I cruised prior to that (Nov 2015) and it was operational back then.

Seems to be hit-or-miss. We were there in May and it worked just like always, with KTTW cards for everyone and photo IDs for adults.

We just bring our DL and KTTWC as we always have for all ports including CC. I know that in January and June of this year there was actually someone checking them at the little area set up before you get back on the ship. Before that, they could have been there, but maybe not enforcing the check? I really don't recall anything prior to January, but that doesn't mean I have just forgotten it. :)
I like to call it cruise brain.
