Is it worthwhile to join the Castaway Club? Does it operate mainly as a promo venue for Disney?

there's no fee involved. once you've cruise once with disney, you're an automatic member. and you get special perks, like free gifts & cocktail reception on board. not sure if there's anything else besides that...

After you cruise with Disney Cruise Line once, you are automatically a member of the Castaway Club.

If you're a member of Castaway Club, does it show up on your documents or should I call DCL to confirm?

They should be able to track it, but I would call to confirm just so that they make sure your gifts are waiting for you.

Just an FYI, on our just completed cruise, we only received the pins on board. They notified us that the beach towels are being MAILED to our home.

Don't know if they ran short, or that has been some sort of tomfoolery by people to get more than one or what.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes to get it, though.
