Excuse me if this question has already been asked a zillion times!!I only just started cruising the cruise boards... pardon my pun... a couple of weeks ago. I'm usually on the WDW boards since thats where we always go but now that I have a cruise planned this is my new home away from home. Does anyone know, or think that Disney will ever put a resort on Castaway Cay & make it like a club med Disney Style? What do ya think? Just curious! Thanks!!!!:D

I am absolutly no expert but, I would guess they wouldn't. I think they will keep it a a cruise perk to keep people coming back on the ship. That's just my guess.

Nope they won't. I say that with pretty good certainty. Its not good on there part. It would not be as special any more. Anyone could go without going on the cruise. They want people to go on the cruise to go there. I really hope the dont and bet 99.9% they won't.

I hear the "BUGS" are nasty! That's why the ship has to leave by 5:00 p.m.!

Why would they? There is a far better resort in Orlando than CC could every be.

Depends on what you want at your resort, GenieDana. I'd like a beach resort (heck, that's why I go to Sanibel Island almost every year). But I think the bugs are too bad on CC and people staying there would probably think the cruisers were "interlopers."

Just Some intresting facts....

Castaway Cay the island has 700 acres 55 only in use
The island use to be called Gorda Cay......

i also thnk no for the resort.....

The island is not really that big and there would be many problems to overcome.

The first major problem would be getting people there - they would have to do it by boat. They would also need to build some accomdations for the staff and also provide transportation to and from the island.

The best part of the island is already used by DCL. On the four days DCL does not use the island, guest would have a great time. But who would want to be staying on the island the 3 days DCL uses it?

Lastly you have no other entertainment venues for guests to go and enjoy other than the beach.

I just don't see how this could be done economically. The resort would have to be small given the size of the island and limited access to the island. Yet the cost to build a resort would be very high.

well there you go, I knew I'd get some educated opinions- thanks a lot, it seemed kinda outlandish to me but you never know. My boyfriend & I went to an Island resort last year because everyone told us to do something OTHER than WDW, & we hated EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!! All I wanted to do was go to WDW- so if they could make it kind of like the Cruise line, where it's not the SAME as WDW but still Disney that would be cool, at the same time it would be really expensive to do! Ok, thanks so much for the info & by the way...

I'VE BEEN TAGGED!!! YAY!!!:teeth:

I've been "Florida Dreaming" fora tag for a while. I know we're not supposed to beg ... and I don't beg for anything ... well, maybe a PS at Palo ... but beyond that .... :teeth:

I have never been but you may want to check out Disney's Vero Beach Resort.

Things Disney would have to do to put a resort on Castaway Cay (remember, no infrastructure to build upon)
Greatly expand saltwater to fresh water capabilities
Greatly expand sewage treatment
Food storage because everything would need to be imported
Do something with the nightime bug problem

These can be overcome with time, technology and money. What wouldn't/couldn't be "fixed" is the wear and tear on Castaway Cay.

The following applies to a resort or the ships making 2 stops per trip there. The islanders do a great job of maintaining the beach and the facilities for us. With limited use three days a week, the crew and mother nature can work to restore the "damage" we inflict upon the island/beach every time we stop there. If there was a resort on the island, people would be on the beach 14-18 and in the water hours per day verses the 7 hours three times a week.

I Love Castaway Cay. Want it to stay "fresh and clean" so it remains a great beach day whenever I cruise Disney. And I am looking forward to the time when the snorkel trail is really teeming with sea life. That won't happen if we are out there everyday disturbing it.

So what if they changed the cruise to be there 2 days, you would be onboard at a certain time - & in turn avoid the bugs, but you had another whole day there so they could put more attractions there, think they'll ever do that?? hhmm...:scratchin

OK,
as much as I would love to be able to stay at Castaway Cay- it is never gonna happen in any way shape or form. What we perceive as "paradise", crew members see "hell!". From my experience of friends who worked on Castaway Cay, it is way too hot to work on in the summer- and the resources just arn't there. Infact, even things merely as simple as floodlighting don't exist on enough of the island. I do think the main issue is definately the bugs though. I know someone whos manager did a night shift there once doing inventory on the stores, and apparently it is awful past 5pm. Even that crystal blue sea has thousands of huge bugs swarming it in the dark. Yes, it would be possible to dock the cruise there overnight and have a curfu- but think how many people would try and sneak off into the island past 5pm- it wouldn't be worth it for Disney. Also, there is the problem of "re-grooming" the areas- this takes daylight to do proberly so it would be impossible to have a sufficient turnaround in time.
Lastly- I think that because Castaway Cay is sooooo amazing, that is a big contributing factor as to why so many guests return to the cruise- I know it would part of the reason I did. If you were there for longer you may not have the desire to hurry back.
Take care all
Simon

I hope that thought never crosses Disneys mind. I love the fact that the only guests on Castaway Cay are those folks on the ship. It you have a resort, then that's more people trying to get chairs, stirring up the water etc...

It is just so wonderful knowing that it is just cruisers that get to go there, and it wouldn't be the same if there were already a slew of people there!
